nah, much older than that... I'm not sure it was Denzel Washington and am fairly sure it wasn't a Spike Lee film so that might narrow it down?

Ah, I was going to suggest He Got Game but that's a Spike Lee film

I vaguely remember that the video ended with a confrontation in someone's house with the main character (who I thought was Mr Washington but it isn't) is trying to prevent a murder

Not sure I'd call this classic myself, but it's from 1980 and someone paid over $4,000 for a copy on 12"....
