Supporters of League One and League Two sides hoping to visit Wembley Stadium with their teams will face disappointment this season. The League One and League Two play-offs will not be played at the North-West London stadium in May 2011 because the Football Association has decided to make room for the Champions League Final. This means that tonight's Football League Trophy competition represents the only realistic chance for a third or fourth tier club to travel to the country's most prestigious venue.
The spanner in the works is that Wembley Stadium has been chosen to stage the 2010-11 Champions League Final on Saturday 28th May - a direct clash with the designated play-off finals weekend for Football League sides. The Championship play-off final has been saved for Wembley and will take place on the Bank Holiday Monday, on 30th May, but the other two divisional finals will have to be played at alternate venues. The Football League are not allowed to stage the finals a week earlier, as UEFA regulations require the venue to not stage any matches in the two week period leading up to their competition final.
The ripple effect will now also affect the Premier League, with the FA Cup Final now scheduled for Saturday 14th May, which was originally intended to be set aside for the penultimate weekend of their season - now meaning that the FA Cup is no longer the domestic climax of the English season for top level clubs and may come at a time when the finalists are also fighting for their League title.
The Football League will now have to hunt for at least one alternative venue for the League One and League Two finals, with the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff the most obvious stadium to pick.

I mentioned this after the play-off final in May, but I think it's a joke that UEFA need the stadium a full two weeks before the final.

Thank fuck for that. Overpriced overblown concrete hellhole. Stage them at villa park or everton or some other real football ground!! Hated everything about the new "Wembley experience" the result just added to the woe.

Went to watch the JPT final between Donny and Rovers a few years ago at the Millenium.
Obviously Wembley has a certain romance about it, but having been there, done that (but not got the t-shirt!) i wouldn't actually mind a Millenium final.
Much better pitch than wembley, and a better atmosphere in my eyes.

I would like to echo the anti-Wembley sentiments. I detest the place.

I'm glad I finally saw my team at Wembley, but I really don't care where the final is as long as we are in it and the pitch is good.

I didn't like the new Wembley stadium one little bit and I won't be going again ever.
Millennium or another 'proper' football ground will do me fine. Otherwise Sky down the pub or at a mate's house.

The new Wembley is crap in terms of atmosphere in comparison to the old one anyway.
Why is the Champion League's Final on a Saturday this year? It's usually on a Wednesday night, the week before the bank holiday weekend?

Last year it was hosted on a Saturday, so it looks that the Saturday final for the Champions League is staying.
