Contrary to what some of the "old fogies"tell you "young-uns"The County Ground was never packed out on regular basis.68/69 season to 71/72 season[4 seasons]the so-called "Glory Years" the average attendance was approx.17,000 when the capacity was approx.32,000.The next 13 seasons averaged approx.7,000[72/73 to 84/85]From 85/86 to 93/94[9 seasons]The Town had 4 promotions[inc.to The Premier]and lost in the play offs once, but still only managed 9,690 average gate.DISCUSS!

What has stadium capacity got to do with it?
Attendances always need to be studied in relation to on the pitch success, prices, the state of the economy, the size of the local population (which has changed dramatically) and various other things. Looking at a bunch of attendance figures doesn't tell the whole story.

17,000 average attendance is pretty good considering the population of the town was a lot lower then. Football attendances everywhere were higher then tho weren't they? Less choice in terms of entertainment and much cheaper ticket prices.

Average gates submitted in the post - 17,000 average means there were obviously some plus 20,000 gates, not bad when you think of a Division Three side. Last season that would have put us in the top four supported clubs in the same league. In 69 we didn't have sides like Leeds, Norwich and Southampton in the division to up the support, especially away support.
