Piece in the Adver tonight...Town v Bolton and there first Sunday match...8,500 saw it.
Town Keeper Jimmy Allen was missing for religious regions.
Nothing changes really...2 up through Ray Clarke and Terry Hubbard,Bolton hit back to grab a point..
The thing that made me chuckle was that because of sunday trading rules at the time the club had to leave one turnstyle open for free entry....of course this was kept hush, hush and only 29 fans went through it for free!
It was a terrible season and i think one match was played on a tuesday afternoon in front of only 3000 fans...with Les Allen (clives dad?)in charge the Town were relegated at the season end...after briefly being top after 3 matches.
A truly terrible season was 73-74, at the time I thought we couldn't have worse but we have.
v Looton in Feb 74 we played at home and lost in front of 2600...the previous week 3284 turned up to see us get dicked 4-1 by Notts County....perhaps the worst humiliation being the scum had a higher average attendance, one of only 2 examples when in the same div.
Those crowds were so low because games had to be afternoon KO's mid week as floodlights were banned in an effort to conserve electricity, during the 3 day week.
I thought it was proper ace, because you could invite a bird round stack up with booze and drugs, and when the power went, use candle light, which tends to get them going a bit. Throw in the fact there was bugger all else to do, and it was a guaranteed shag
