Played my first Sunday league game for bloody ages on Sunday, and ever since the front of my shins have been absolutely killing me. I normally get fairly saw after I play (normally do 5-a-side once a week at least) but not enough to make me hurt whilst generally walking around.
I've never had them before and I'm not really sure what the best course of action is. I've heard about getting better footwear but is there anything else I can do to stop and/or prevent them??
Thanks.

Same as that I am afraid. I used to get it when jogging. Tried to work the muscle on the shin by lifting my toes up towards the sky (whilst upright), but nothing really worked. Gave up jogging in the end. ps more spongy shoes does help a little...

I run like a spastic (always have) and jogging in my teens gave me the same problem. So I don't any more.
Go for a long bike ride instead, it's kinder without the jarring of running. Obviously riding a bike while playing five a side is probably unacceptable.

I have always suffered with shin splints and all I ever got was very very tight calf muscles and a feeling like bad cramp in them after about 10-15 mins of games, the only cure is rest and for the serious there is a calf loosening operation (last resort)

I get them. Like others, mine started when I took up jogging. They got so bad that I got halfway through my run and then limped/waddled home looking a little John Wayne-esque.
I find doing some stretches before exercising helps a lot. A good one is to stand on a step with your heels hanging off the edge, take your weight on your toes and drop your heels down to stretch out your calf muscles. Infact, if you do that daily for a few months rather than just before exercise it'll be a more permanent long term solution, so that you won't need to do stretches in the future.
