On a day like today I'm trying to prove or disprove a family story. I've been told that my late grandfather was awarded a military cross for acts of bravery in world war II. I have most of his medals but haven't got that one so I'm looking to confirm the story. So far every website I've tried wants to charge me stupid money to find out his service record. Does anyone know how I can find out without paying some site who have no right to earn money just because I may be related to a war hero?

Go here : http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

Then click on "research guide a to z" in the quick links box in the top right. Then go to the letter M.

There are four entries for medals, they should either take you through to a list of who was awarded what or will tell you how where you need to check.

If you need any more info let me know as my dad knows his stuff with this sort of thing.

That's an awesome site. Great tip.
Does anyone know how to track people's war service more generally?

Theres lots of sites, but they cost....the Great War Forum is good because you have experts on there who see it as a challenge when you pose them a question......register post the details you have and in no time you will get a picture of any rellies you have who faught or indeed died in the wars....alot of them are fully paid up members of Ancestry etc and dont mind looking for details.
