It looks as if the libel laws the UK are to be updated so that they fall into to line with the increased use of the internet, according to the Ministry of Justice.

The changes in the UK libel laws could mean that website owners will no longer face the so called open ended liability for any material or statements that are published online.

The ‘Defamation and the Internet: the multiple publication rule’, a paper published by the Ministry of Justice, will report that the multi publication rule could be scrapped in the near future.

The rule is that a complaint can be brought within a year each time an article is clicked on by a web user, but it is believed that the new rules could ensure that legal action could be taken only once within a set time after the article is published.

This is currently in consultation and is due to end on the 16th December.
