Has any body been there for a holiday?

I am looking to book a week in January for my 26th birthday.

Comments and advice welcome.

yes i have been went for 10 days in 2000, was a beautiful island, funchal is ace, i booked flight only and got a little hotel overlooking the cathedral for £7 a night, much better than the huge hotels in the tourist area of the town. The island is amazing with incredible breathtaking scenery.

Plus if you fancy a bit of a beach holiday thrown in go over to porto santo for a couple of nights, madeira's sister island is europes last unspoilt outpost, you will have miles of white sandy beach to yourself, paradise.

Also maritimo play in funchal so you could take in a portugese premier league game too.

KoT has summed it up perfectly. Lovely place, avoid the touristy bit with regards to hotels, football (In fact, I think there are now two teams in the top division who play on alternate weekends). The only thing I'd add is that the swimming pools blasted into the rock on the North of the island are well worth a visit if you have a car. It's something like €1.50 for the whole day!

What KoT said, I went with my parents when I was quite young so don't remember much, only that the scenery was absolutely beautiful, some rather terrifying (at the time) ride on a wooden sledge down a steep hill into Funchal, and that the airport had a bloody short runway.

That's what we thought, then we realised its about €25 a go, and they expect another €25 at the bottom as a 'tip', depsite the fact they've done nothing. They have to make a living, but it didn't seem worth it to me.

They drink a local cocktail called Poncha, made from Madeiran white rum. Very nice, and where we were it was pretty cheap!
