a few questions for you lot, I'm sure Reg and OST in particular will be most excited about this topic.

Value wise, am I better off going for an 20gb iPod or a 4gb iPod mini? I have 40gb of music on my HDD already, but the vast majority of it isn't stuff I will want to listen to day-in day-out anyway, the iPod mini is also a lot smaller and lighter (from what I can tell, I haven't had a chance to compare them directly) which would be ideal for college.

How long does it take to transfer an average size song (5mb) to the iPod from your PC?

Is it possible to manage playlists in iTunes and send them to your iPod seperately? i.e. I could put all my hip-hop stuff on one day, then remove it and put a mix of stuff on instead.

What's the battery life like?

I've been playing with one tonight and the sound quality is pretty impressive and it's persuaded me to lean towards an iPod mini rather than the massive fuckers, which will end up having so much music on it'll take me hours to find a single track.

Is it worth getting one off Ebay as opposed to retail stores?

I've got an iPod mini so can't totally help but the size of them is much better and I reckon they look better. I can tell you this, the mini is great for college!

Transfer time for me (judging on a 15 track album I've just done) equates to 1 min per song, give or take a bit, probably less

You can set up all your own playlists and it'd keep them in order, yeah

Battery life for mine is about 13 hours until it's nearly dead, which is not bad really.

I've got all my 4gb used up with 1100 songs which is plenty given that I keep chopping and changing

Technical stuff won't mean owt to me anyway, I'm not as much of a nerd as I look. 1100 songs is plenty really, 20gb would probably be overkill.

i'd definitely get a normal sized one unless you're female or gay. i've got a 20gb and have to delete some old crap of it every now and again to fit new stuff on, I kinda wish I'd saved up a bit more and got a 40gb.

the size doesn't matter, normal one is small enough plus i think has a better screen.

a song takes about 1 second to go through.

yes you can manage playlists in itunes and send them to ipod. download itunes now and have a play around, it's free and a decent music prog.

battery life is about 6-8 hours on my one:

and is boosted by turning the backlight off (big drain) and lightening the contrast a little.

and i'd buy new unless ebay sellers have a solid rep.

I got a cheaper version of the 20gb iPod and it was the best decision i ever made.  Well, it was a good decision.

My Mrs has just bought a 4gb Ipod, seems to do the job well enough.  We managed to get songs on there at about 15-25 sec per song.  Very impressive stuff.

Get the 20Gb SY, mine is pretty much my favourite thing (apart from pro evo ), and I've had it 1.5 years.

Transfer rate, as OF said is abou5t 1 song per second, obviously this will depend on the speed of your machine etc.

Battery life is the only pig really, but will last you a day at college.  I've bought a seperate pack for it too, which takes 4 'AA' batteries and will charge it up nicely.
