going surfing there this weekend, anyone knows of any must-do things, nice restaurants etc etc? Not been there since I was about 7!
Any tips gratefully appreciated. Somebody has mentioned Lundy island or something?

Just up from Woolacombe is Puttsborough, a much superior surfing beach. Definitely recommended.

Croyde and Saunton sands are supposed to be really good for surfing. Superb views down the beach from the terrace of the Saunton sands hotel
There is a really good selection of restaurants in Ilfracombe, about 5-6 miles away
Lundy Island is a full day trip, and doesn't run every day. Departures from Ilfracombe and Bideford - if you're only there for a weekend It's probably not a goer. plenty of great walking, either the coastal path or up on Exmoor
Be aware that the roads into Saunton, Croyde and Woolacombe are a nightmare on weekend mornings, and are occasionally closed by the police if capacity is reached.

I love it at Woolacombe. Croyde is a nice little place to visit, good beach/surfing and some nice pubs. Don't go clubbing in Barnstaple it is awful. I went to the club there, I think it was called glitter balls for starters and the floor was so sticky I lost my shoes, I kid you not. People just left their shoes stuck to the floor. Mary Celeste for shoes.

As Birdy says, Croyde is really good too. It'll be really busy at all the beaches and parking can be a nightmare. There's a 'dinosaur'/wildlife attraction between Ilfracombe and Combe Martin which is good family entertainment, and there's 'The Big Sheep' attraction at Bideford which is reputed to be good fun. Depends how keen you are on the beach I guess. Ilfracombe is the best place for restaurants, and it's got the usual seaside crazy golf and amusements, as well as a nice harbour. Also a good selection of tea/coffe places. Restaurants are not particularly child welcoming though. Good 90min boat trips up and down the coast from the Harbour, also mackerel fishing which might amuse the boys, (have seen lots of youngsters with crab lines around the harbour/rokpools as well) Slightly further afield you've got Lynton/Lynmouth with a water powered lift, and great scenery up on Exmoor. |
