Nil By Mouth is really good, but perhaps not one to watch if you're up for a laugh....

Career best performances from Ray Winstone and Kathy Burke in my opinion.

50 dead men walking and perhaps more popularly, Hunger, are both very good films. I think they're British anyway, set in the Troubles in N. I.
