Fuck me thats a design flaw on a par with microsofts decision that cooling in the original xbox 360's wasnt really that imporatant.

Summed up by this quote from the BBC story on the issue: When Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone 4 at Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, he described the integrated antenna as "really cool engineering". See, that's the whole problem right there Steve - too much focus on cool, not nearly enough on engineering.

Sorry to disappoint you all but mine works brilliantly! Took literally 5 mins to transfer to micro sim and old sim to deactivate and no issues with how its held (yes I tried both hands).

As an owner of an xbox 360 (with cooling) i would rather it blew up because it's marginally less silent than the average spitfire.

Doesn't look excessive force to me. Its an embarrassing design fault, Apple will have to employ some lefty testers for the next release.

I'm a lefty. I wasn't going to get one anyway, but I definitely won't now. I wouldn't be surprised to see Apple come out with a lefty specific model now.

It does seem like it could be fixed relatively simply, by simply enclosing the antenna in the surround properly. And for existing units, some form of rubber iGromit to just cover the exposed bit would surely do the job? Although that would perhaps spoil the "cool" lovely aesthetics so Apple won't do it (after all, looking lovely is far more important than actually working properly), but I'd guess the aftermarket will

It's not just lefties though - how many people hold the phone in their left hand when browsing the internet (so touching the screen with their right)?

I don't think it matters which hand you hold it in, the black band is on both sides - cover either and it's a problem.
It's funny how it isn't affecting everyone, I did read one article that reckoned it could be a production fault - with the correct finish not being applied to the antennae which would protect against a short.
Can't see Apple being able to sweep this under the carpet, despite what Steve Jobs seems to think.

It just seems weird because Apple are usually very hot on making everything work well
