He means the baseband firmware, but that is what controls the modem part of the iPhone.

Baseband only affects your ability to unlock, not jailbreak.

Having read a few blogs, I don't think I'll be upgrading to iOS4 any time soon.

For 3G users (me) there's no multi-tasking, no screen lock and no home screen wallpaper. All things I can currently do with a jailbroken 3G on 3.1.3.

The new features that are accesible are folders, threaded mail, 5x digital zoom, iBooks and game centre. The only one of those that appeals to me is folders and I can already do that.

I won't be doing it either, as like you said, most of it can be done via a Jailbroken phone.

Anyone know if there is an easy way to tell if your iPhone is still carrier locked? (other than by trying another sim card)

I requested it to be unlocked via the O2 website. There was a message that flashed up saying something about unlocking when I upgraded to iOS 4 but I didn't really pay attention and it was gone before I knew it. So now I'm not sure.

So you've been carrying the phone round with the screen permanently on?

Restore to what? The current firmware? The only thing you can't do on a 3GS is downgrade the firmware (unless you saved your blobs in Cydia - I'm guessing not). Regardless, you should still be able to restore to the current firmware e.g. if you jb'd 3.1.3 you should be able to restore to standard 3.1.3.
