Any advice - just started in the last few weeks and seems to be getting worse. It could be even when I@m typing something.

It's probably overheating. Try cleaning the vents and fan with compressed air, or if you're lazy and want to risk it, use a hoover - although you could fuck something up with a static charge, btu I think jjedmunds does this and has never had problems.

This is indeed true Si, yes you get static build up but it takes months to do so, blow or suck its pretty much the same results.

If its not overheating, you could have a dodgy motherboard. Which will mean new laptop most probably.

A dodgy motherboard would most likely not boot at all.

Its pretty much always plugged into the mains so don't think its a battery issue.

Nope it doesn't restart. My first option is to disable Spybot resident mode - whether its a coincidence or not. My next option will be to clean the bugger - its not had a good clean since I had it. I'll see where I am with it then. Thanks for the replies.

Might also be a good idea to check your application and system logs for errors. To do do this go to start>run then type the line below and press ok:
COMPMGMT.MSC
This will bring up the computer management console. You can then select the event viewer in the left hand panel of that window.
