All week I've seen German sides having friendly matches against other European sides who shut down over the January period.

Why do they have a winter shut down if they want to play friendlies?

Gives 'em a chance to try out a few things in a non-competetive game, sort out any issues from the first half of the season and possibly bed in any new signings?
