My favourites are both German.  'Das Boot' has been shown quite recently.  And 'Heimat' is legendary (and controversial).  I remember watching Heimat as a kid and being hooked.  I still can't quite put my finger on why.  (There are three Heimat films, with a total running time of over 50 hours.)

Anything by Werner Herzog is good....particularly Fitzcarraldo and Aguirre, Wrath of God.

Anyone interested, there's an active film society in Swindon....in Jan they're showing The Marriage of Maria Braun by  Rainer Werner  Fassbinder.

Cant believe no one has mentioned the italian classic cinema paradiso. Possibly the most beautiful cinematography of all time.

Waltz With Bashir is really excellent. A cartoon documentary about a massace in the Lebanon might not sound much fun but it is great. Although not as a date movie.

What he said, gorgeous film.  The shorter version that was released in cinemas originally is better than the full one though, I think.
