right.my pc is playing up.if i switch it to standby then try to get it going again it sort of tries to work, but puts out no picture, and after the fan kicking for a while in it then does nothing.i have to switch it off at the power to get it going again.if i switch the pc off then restart it works fine.
my daughter(who is 8)was the last one to use it before it went stupid so i have no idea what the problem is.i tried a system restore to a week ago but the problem remains.
anyone have a clue what the fuck it's doing?

I take it you're running XP?

First thing I would try is to disable hibernation, reboot and then re-enable it.

If so go to start>control panel and in classic view select 'power options'. In the hibernation tab untick the 'enable hibernation' box.

Then obviously reboot and then retick it. See if that works.

Don't blame your innocent daughter. Clearly your late night porn surfing fucked it.

Have you plugged something in you wouldn't normally have done? e.g. into a usb port?

Try going back into control panel and then keyboard settings and see if there is an option to allow device to wake up from power saving mode. Do the same for the mouse.

no good si.cannot see those options through the method you describe.
it's weird as after putting it in standby mode which it does ok it just wont start up again.the fan kicks in then stops after a few seconds, the blue light stays on but thats it.
i think its fucked.nothing i have done could have done it. and how an 8 year old could wreck something a sytem restore wont sort i dont get?
think it may just have run it's course.
it's 3 1/2 years old and has been used loads.

It just sounds like a setting or an application is preventing it from waking up. It isn't the computer that's fucked imo. I've had similar things in the past, they're all settings related (or something tricking the computer to do something other than what you want it do).

Thinking about it you'll need to right click on my computer>properties>hardware>device manager and then right click on the mouse and keyboard and change the option in there.

By the way what computer is it (make and model)?

checked both the mouse and keyboard settings and they are set already.i can hit a key or move the mouse and the fan will initially kick in,blue light comes on, but then nothing.

I've just realised that those settings are not available on SP2 or 3 of XP. I should check my own machine before making such suggestions!  Embarrassed

Anyway, I think I have a potential solution and rather than explaining loads of boring stuff and getting you t ochange endless options, I'm hoping this tweak I created will work. Download the file I created and double click it. It should hopefully sort out your problem.

If that still doesn't work I'd say that your BIOS has a power option enabled/disabled that needs to be changed.

Tap the del key when you turn on the machine and it will take you into the BIOS. Have a look for any power management options. You can always write down your current settings before you change any of them in case you want to change back at any point.

Definitely not a case of your hardware packing up if the computer works fine otherwise though.
