I need a VAT number for a supplier although at the moment technically I am below the threshold for VAT and I don't need to actually register.

The French buggers are insistant though that they have a VAT number before they'll share the love and their prices.

Now, as I understand it all they can check is if it's a valid VAT number (yes/no/invalid/error) so is there anything stopping me from simply half inching a friend's or even a randoms VAT number and feeding them a line?

As far as I can tell it's easy streets but any advice appreciated as these fucking Frogs are doing my nut in.

Thanks folks.  Got it nailed.  All that the damn frogs can check is if it's valid or not and as I'm not resident in the EEC anyway the buggers wouldn't be able to check any number I obtain anyway.

I sent her an email explaining and they've sent prices through.
