Sat 30th August 1997

We won away at Stoke City 2 -1 (Allison and Hay) first Championship game at the
Brittania Stadium.Very similar weather to today and of course, away win and the same scoreline!

However, the events later that evening shocked the whole world.Diana was to die in a car crash
in the Paris tunnel.

I can remember thinking that i'd just check the news headlines on Ceefax, before going to bed.
I saw that there had been a terrible crash. It was mesmeric watching the news unfold and you
just knew that things were getting worse and worse.Hadn't the heart to wake the Mrs and to tell her.

i remember being angry there was nothing on telly the day after. I missed any dianna hoo-ha. Apart from marrying prince charles and helping a few old ladies up stairs just why was there such a big reaction when she died?

Whatever we thought of Diana, her death struck a cord with the whole country. We've never seen scenes
like it,in this country.Personally,i'm not a great fan of the royal family.

The following sunday we were at home to Forest.Bassett was the manager and they had Van Hooijdonk etc
It was also the commentary game on Five Live.

I remember coming downstairs quite early in the morning to find both my parents still in their dressing gowns and slippers watching the coverage! Thats about it. My Town addiction hadn't begun by that point.

I'd just moved back to Gods own town from Slave Trader Central. I must admit I'm a republican and couldn't give a flying fuck about Di's death other than the basic humanitarian thuoght about her children. I couldn't believe the outpouring of grief. I do remember the North Korean leader had just been buried and there were stories in the press saying what a bunch of tossers the Koreans were for their outpouring of grief. At least they were showing grief to stay alive.

Missed that one, didn't go to many away games until I was a bit older. Did make the Stoke away game at the end of 00/01 season. All the players were hungover. We got trounced 4-1. Adrian Bakali(sp?) was fucking awesome. van der Linden's last game, who I rate as the third best footballer we've had this decade (along with woan and migz).

Princess who?

Didn't the FA postpone all fixtures for the funeral... I seem to remember being annoyed about that.

...and the cartoons.

I remember being relieved I was in Ibiza and missed all of that. A sad day for her and her kids and stuff, but the mass hysteria that seemed to ensue was pathetic.

In fact we were on the plane on the way to Ibiza when it was confirmed she was dead. There were a lot of "bing bing bings", a lot of scuttling stewardess followed by "Ladies and Gentleman, this is the captain speaking, unfortunately.....". As I was a very nervous flyer I relieved the news was what it was.

---

Edit: Forgot to have a rant about the endless amounts of money spent after the event on investigating the numerous Al Fyed "she and Dodi were bumped off " accusations.

She wasn't, but even if she was it's more likely that I'd score the winner in this years FA Cup final than the 'independent commission' declare Diana was murdered. Roll Eyes

I was in Florida too, I swear every channel had it on. No one seemed too bothered at Disneyland though haha.

I went to Brands Hatch the Sunday after the funeral for BTCC (the Saturday got cancelled out of respect!?!). So the grid for the first race was decided by the quickest lap in the morning practise and the grid for the second was decided by the fastest lap times in the first race. It made a pretty mental grid for the second race so it worked out pretty well that people were going mental over Diana.
