Anybody see what went down? I drove past it at about 20:10 and there were no less than 6 fire engines, a 4 inch deep puddle and a shed load of rozzers securing the perimeter. I wonder if one of the perfume girls got too close to a naked flame?

Oddly I went in there on Tuesday, first time for years, but bumped into a mate, and wandered about a bit rabbiting....he was going there. I mentioned the fact that I used to be a carpet salesman on the 3rd floor, and my other abiding memory was the amount of slap and scent on the birds in the perfumery. I couldn't go near them.

Is the perfume bit still downstairs by the main entrance? Haven't been in there for years, but when I was a kid it used to set of my asthma.
Oh and smoking cures asthma. Fact.

Walking through Queen's Park earlier, I noticed the drink of choice amongst the dossers was White Star....would this be up or down market from White Ace?

I've tried both and I prefer White Ace. Although I don't think that's a definitive answer for the classiness question. Frosty Jacks is the king of the tramp ciders, but 3 Litres of White Ace is always priced at £2.89 so wherever you go it's nearly always cheaper.
Haven't wandered through Queen's Park for a long time. Back in my New College Days it was a favourite evening shmoking spot. Not sure why. Lawns is much better. Especially looking back down the hill back towards Walcott/New College. When it get's dark and you're a little bit wasted you can play the spelling out words with the street lights game. Or at least you used to be able to.

Back in the day in the Lawns , we used to sit in the trees by the big sarsens, and admire that view, its now been added to by the 5 wind turbines at Watchfield. I liked to play the look at the trees and see what you can see game, I'm sure JRR Tolkien must have had something stronger than Old Holborn in his pipe when he made up Treebeard.

The whole finding a good place to have a smoke is sort of immaterial really, as long as you've got the right smoke/imagination ratio you should be able to find some mind inspiration pretty much anywhere. It's more about the vibe of a place, although I suppose that a good view and relative quiet helps with that.
Of course it's a sign of spending most my life here that I can consider any of Swindon quiet at all. I think my definition of quiet is more a lack of sudden noise. I'm not sure we realise how good most of us have become at blocking out the background sounds.

Perfume smelling department store entrances always remind me of the Mr Bean sketch where he goes to Alders.........
