It seems to be an installment I bring each week these days which suggests my life revolves around alcohol but oh well latest pub update is I have heard the Goddard Arms is being taken over by the Barracuda group. Having looked at there website it looks quite good so hopefully should be good addition to old town drinking Linkage enclosed below: http://www.barracudagroup.co.uk/home/main.asp?id=11

Ace, Liquid and now Barracuda. Shame I'm off in September.
The Barracuda in Newquay is the best night out in England I've had, when we were on holiday down there a couple of years back.

So its a bit like a South African version of Walkabout.....bit of a leap in the imagination to see how that will work in the Goddards. Still what do I know......got a few happy memories of the Goddards....

It hasn't officially been called the Goddard Arms for ages. It's the part of the hotel opposite the end of Wood Street. They're selling off most of the hotel I believe? It can't just be the bar, it's not very big. I'm guessing they're getting part of the function/dining rooms and kitchens as well.
Unless I'm going horribly wrong in my slightly pissed state.
Anyway. More chain bars yay. Although old town is more breweries.

I did just assume that this would be turned to flats, so if it did become a boozer I'd be in favour. It was a blow to lose the Oddfellows Arms from that corner of OT.

I was thinking about places in Old Town that could be altered to be better things the other day. Commonweal School was the first that came to mind. Nice(ish) building, courtyard in the middle. Why not turn it into a massive awesome bar? There was moves to put the school down on the front garden anyway. I'm well up for pissing off the middle-class types who only live in Old Town because they think they'll get a better school. Loads of potential there.
The Town Gardens hasn't been doing bad for it's summer mini-gigs. But it could do with a permanent bar in the middle. That would be a fucking ace place to chill out on a summer's night.
I'm sure there's more.

I'm sure there's more. PMH could have been turned into an ace club/pub venue....definitely a wasted opportunity.

The council line was that it was "falling apart" wasn't it? Had to be knocked down to protect the lost souls who died there.
With the arse falling out of the flat building market, maybe the council will encourage other things on land they're selling off. Slightly unrelated, but not quite, the best way to make the town centre not completely shit, would be to offer cheeper leases to local companies than they do big mr. chain shit. Be it drinking establishments, clothes shops, or just me shouting in a room asking for beer and fags.
