WITH a £370 million fortune Henley’s Sir Martyn Arbib and his family are among the most wealthy people in the country, according to the Sunday Times Rich List.

Sir Martyn was placed 70th in the list of the top 1,000 richest published by the newspaper last Sunday.

The trustee and major benefactor of the River & Rowing Museum, Henley, amassed many of his millions in the town with Perpetual, a fund management company he started with two phones and a secretary, and sold six years ago for £1.05 billion.

The 66-year-old, who was knighted in 2003, divides his time between homes in Henley and Barbados. Reportedly worth £95 million more than last year he has risen five places on the list.

I heard somewhere that there was a 4th member of the consortium. Some Seikh race horse owner, although Abib's name and connection could have led to some confusion there.

Regardless.....

Sir Martyn Arbib (born 1940) is a British businessman who led the Perpetual fund management company very successfully during the late 20th century, unusually based in Henley-on-Thames, England rather than London.

He sold the company to the fund manager AMVESCAP in 2001 for more that £1 billion, receiving £113m together with AMVESCAP shares worth £300m, and the company became known as Invesco Perpetual.

Arbib was a major benefactor in the establishment of the River and Rowing Museum at Henley, which opened in 1998. He was knighted in 2003.

In his spare time, he is interested in horse racing. His horse Snurge won the St. Leger Stakes in 1990. As well as Henley, he also has a home in Barbados.

On 11th January 2008 Swindon Town Holdings Limited which Sir Martyn Arib is a director took control of Swindon Town FC.

Has anyone let our lovely neighbours know about our wonderful news yet?

Poor old Pox, 13th in the conference, just been beaten at home against Weymouth and now their cash strapped league rivals have just won the lottery.

Hee hee.
