Right - I'm thinking of getting one of these bad boys and was going to pay a little bit extra for the 60GB version - but this seems to have disappeared off the shelves and the 40GB one is the only one that seems to be available now - can anyone tell me why?

Also what will I be losing out on by only getting the 40GB version (apart from the obvious 20GB of hard disk space!), or is there a new version due to hit the shelves soon that I should wait for??

The 60gb version was backwards compatible with PS2 games, the 40gb version isn't.

My brother in law told me that only the 60gb one was able to play PS2 games?  seems illogical when a ps3 is so much more powerful than a ps2?

I have the 40 gb one.

2 less USB ports than 60gb version.

No backwards compatibility with PS2 games.

Doesn't play super audio CD's.

I'd save money and buy the 40gb one and then if you really need a bigger hard drive, do it yourself.

They just wanted to phase out the 60gb version as it would cost less to make than the 40gb version.

Luckily i got the 60gb version before it went.

I got my boy the 40gb one after originally looking for the 60gb one.  After investigation I found out that the 60gb basically had a PS2 built within it and this caused noise and overheating issues with that version so opted for the 40gb one.  If you are that desperate to play PS2 games on it then wait for the 80gb one to come out midway through the year, but why would you want to play PS2 games when the PS3 games have made such an improvement!

Buy the 40gb and upgrade Hard disk when you need it I say!

my 60gig is virtually silent.
40gig does have blu ray.the only differences are that it cant play ps2 games and has 2 usb slots rather than 4(not needed anyway)and doesn't have memory card slots.
still a great machine imo

PS3 is also a fantastic DVD player. Silent as a mouse and it upscales my DVD collection to 1080p very well indeed.

Blu Ray is on a whole new level providing you have a decent 1080p tv.

The sharpness, crispness and colours is something that simply didn't exist 2 years ago.
