Motherwell captain Phil O'Donnell has died after collapsing towards the end of his side's Scottish Premier League game against Dundee United.
The 35-year-old midfielder fell to the ground just as he was about to be replaced with Marc Fitzpatrick near the end of Motherwell's 5-3 victory.

O'Donnell was treated for around five minutes on the field before being taken to a waiting ambulance.

I've just read the news, and must say I'm shocked. RIP Phil and condolences to family, friends and all at Motherwell. Sad news indeed.

It's obviously sad and all, but I wonder if there are any records somewhere backing up a rise. I'm sort of morbidly interested to see football deaths/year stats. See if it really is rising or if it's just an anecdotal thing bought around by the media more willing to run with more personal stories in sport.

There does seem to have been a few in the last 12 months, am I right in thinking that most have been youth players or am I getting mixed up with stabbings/shootings/driving?

I'm also guessing Peaks, JP McG and Barry Corr must have known him from Sheff Weds - weren't they all there at the same time as him? He went back to Well in 2005.

2003 he left Wednesday, so none of them would have been there.
