Ralph, you don't find out what the case is until you turn up. So if, for example, you'd been convicted of a drugs offence, and it was a drugs case, you'd be deemed to have a conflict of interests and not be able to stand on the jury. This may be taken into account when selecting people for jury service, so as not to waste time and money to just have to send jurors home again.

Never been asked myself, funnily enough.
