I seem to remember a thread about a year back about claiming back bank charges.
I've just gone through my bank statements from august 2001 to present day and have worked out that HSBC have took £1,397 off me in overdraft fees.
Did anyone manage to claim back their money under the new laws?

Too late Ralphy. You will have to wait for the OfT vs The Banks ruling now before you can get a claim settled. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6918140.stmIt shouldn't take long, but if it goes (our) way then the floodgates will open.

i'm in the trade and no you don't-so keep trying to reclaim and keep me in a job
GENERALLY they'll fob you off 1st time and refuse to give you back anything and 50% of folk accept that.if you try again, they'll offer you half of the charges.go back and ask for the full amount and most of em will pay up
btw its only unauthorised fees that are refunded e.g. your o/d limit is 100quid and you go o/d by 100quid 10p and they charge you 30quid for going only 10p o/d. it has been deemed unfair that this 30quid charge is excessive for going 10p over ya overdraft limit....if that makes sense :?
sorry if this is eggs and sucking.....
on another note, anyway know how to change a keyboard back to english/normality as i get me '@' sign by shift & 2 rather than the one with the apostrophe and i can't find a bloody pound sign (see the word 'quid' above)

So let me get this straight. I can only claim back charges where i've gone a few quid over my overdraft limit?
Some of my charges are very high. We're talking £50, £75 or even £125 a month!!!!
When i was alot younger i used to regularly go well over my overdraft.
How do i know what i can and can't claim back?

I think that what they're saying is that it's not any interest you paid that you get back, but the fees they charge you. Cheques bouncing, cashback whilst over limit sort of thing when they slap you £30.

How do i know what i can and can't claim back? You can only claim back within the past six years. What your looking for on your bank Statement (who do you bank with?) is something like "Paid Refferal Fee". These are where the banks has charged you for going over your overdraft. Mine have totalled almost £3500 over 6 years. Go onto www.penaltycharges.co.uk and search through there forums etc on Bank Charges. http://www.penaltychargesforum.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=230choose your bank and read through the info they have supplied. it's all free and are extremely helpful. All formes are there for free and they help you with filing it all in correctly.

depending on the bank and the amount, be prepared to see it through to small claims though. Some of them have dug in more recently, especially against the bigger claims, and 1 or 2 have lost.

you have to keep it under £5k (including interest) to go through small claims. the court case means that anyone making a claim (or in the process of making a claim) won't have it dealt with until the case is concluded, which could take over a year. the claims that have lost have only done so on a technicality, like wrong or insufficient paperwork being submitted.
