Left the house at 6.20 yesterday morning....

Got home at 1.20 this morning.....

Had a fucking mini bus that :

1. Had next to no brakes.

2. Had an overheating radiator.

3. Wiper blades packed up on way home.

4. Lights packed up on way home.

Got stranded in Poxfordshire for 2 and a half hours and didn't get back to swindon till after 11.00, then had to drive home.

Gotta say I had a laugh though, espicially after the piece of crap broke down!

And we won! All in all not a bad day!!

well done herthab, many thanks to you for taking on the challenge (I presume we forgot to mention about using the dodgiest Mini Bus company in the Western world).

i told my dad the name of the minibus company when i got in, he shuddered and told me about a time they had a dangerfields minibus and a wheel fell off on the m40.

I'm sorry you had such a shit time with the minibus, Steve and passengers.

However...

The minibuses from Dangerfields usually only cost £75 each a day (this NYD was a lot more because somebody had to come in specially to do the paperwork etc). So firstly they are dirt cheap.

Secondly (as everybody noticed with bits falling off and stuff), you can load them up with beer and drunk Town fans and whatever we do to them has little impact.

To put this in perspective, my good lady hires minibuses from GWR for the school she works at. They are all brand spanking new, cost two to three times as much but also have a very detailed examination for damage both on pick up and drop off. This includes scratches, upholstery damage and so on. Even a small problem means that you have to cough up the excess.

So as in most things in life, you get what you pay for. Would anybody have wanted to pay £30+ for yesterday, with the condition (and my constant worry) that the buses might get vaguely damaged or that beer might have got accidentally spilt?

We've hired a total of six for the trips so far and with the exception of Steve's lemon yesterday they have got us there and back.

As long as they are not actually dangerous.

But then again, Steve's brakes didn't work, FW's handbrake didn't and Sonic's dad knows about one losing a wheel...

Well said Al, the fact that they are all a bit knackered means we couldn't wreck 'em, and I guess provided they can be proved as roadworty ie MOTs etc then they are spot on.  I'm still mystified by how our lights failing was actually caused by the radiator fan nearly falling off?!

Detective Hayward has just pieced the puzzle together...

Steve's minibus was fine until about halfway to Didcot, when the charging light came on and the temperature gauge started climbing. Followed by a realisation that the brakes were not working very well.

On the way back (and in the dark), the wipers packed up and then the battery went and consequently the lights.

Sooooooooooooo

The fan belt probably went half way up the A34 on the journey there. No fan belt = no water pump (overheats) and no alternator (no amps). They probably have pump driven power assisted brakes as well (no brakes).

The battery would have been man enough to last quite a few hours, even with the headlights on. First sign of it going flat...not enough umph to power the wipers. Still enough to burn the candles until sadly, that gave up too.

I should have asked Larwood to take her stockings off at Didcot station to effect a repair...
