gary neville the main instigator, i think.

nike a definitely doing it to cash in. where does the money from their new wristbands go? dont think its all charitable. and even if all the money is donated, they're still getting the good publicity from it which boosts their sales in the future (unless something like the current situation happens and the public turns on them, but i doubt it)

even the ones by radio one are a publicity stunt! get's people interested and wotnot, so of course it's advertising

A bit like radio 1's latest marketing thing. Ask people to text in to their shows at every available opportunity. Interact with the listeners and make a tidy profit in the process. Kerching!
