Pissed me off a tad as well. Fortunately I was sharing with a few lads on my course so we used to share the burden.
Book tokens at Xmas and birthdays where always a decent enough way to avoid getting stuff from relatives which usually gets left unopened.
Plus if they know it's educational they tend to up the anti a bit.
We could use leftovers at our Uni on mags, papers and books worth reading so thre was never any waste.

looks like a few more trips to the library. if you look in the campus bookshop there are much better books than the ones lecturers tell you to buy. i sware they get commission :x

Not being a student myself.....but can't you get them off the students that did the course before? depends. if you can find one that hasn't been highlighted, underlined and is the latest edition - oh and hasn't been bought 6 months in advance by some supergeek then yeah i guess....

no, because when people 'highlight', they basically colour in whole paragraphs in all manner of different colours. kind of does your eyes in

I've managed not to buy one yet. Even if I wanted too wouldn't be able to afford all the recomended text books anyway. Somehow manage to blag my way through without.
Did fail my second year though. Put that down to too much alcohol, afternoon tv and not doing coursework than lack of books though

Most of the texts I had to buy were written by the lecturers themselves, so they were getting the whole sodding lot, not just commission!
Still, at least they knew the books inside out I suppose.
