The best way to pass University is to simply look at old past papers.  Probably around 10-11 of the 16 papers i took at uni had simlar if not identical questions in this years paper to that of previous years. Also attend the class/workshops which the lecturers give.  Usually they give taks/problemsets - which also are identical to the questions which appear on the exam paper.

That leaves more time for  Beers  Beers  Beers

Or just go to Solent University (AKA Southampton Destitute). They'll pass anyone judging from the documentary a while back.

What did DMR get - he's keeping quiet.

My daughter needed A B B to read English at Sheffield.  She got A A C (and one of the A's, in psychology, was done in a year) but they have rejected her.

Spoke to the admissions tutor - she advised that they dont operate a points system (AAC > ABB) so she suggested my daughter should have taken General Studies where most people are nailed on to get at least a B, and they would have accepted that!

Perverse!

that's mental, can't see the logic in that at all. i thought the only uni's which didn't do the points thing were oxford and cambridge  Shocked

unlucky dex, brighton's probably nicer than cardiff though

agree with si pi - for the majority of decent jobs, a-levels matter a tiny bit, what uni you went to matters alot and the course barely matters at all. they're looking at the qualification nowadays, and proof that you can learn to a certain standard (in whatever subject).

Its naive to think that outside of the obvious elite uni's that which uni you went to is really going to have any relevance to your job prospects in the long term

The gerneral public has no perception at all of the difference between 2 middle of the road universities, and I'm guessing a large number of employers will think that too.

People simply dont give a shit that X uni is ranked 15 places higher in the league tables than Y uni. youhave a dregree in XXx to 2:1 standard and thats that.

They are more interested in you as an individual and whether you are right for the job. I'd employ someone from an "inferior" uni who was very good in interviews every time.

The uni's want you to believe that their name will help, but in my experience, in the real world that is not the case.

cardiff is shit because:

-its full of the welsh
-its quite a pikey city full of craig bellamys
-saturday nights are a no-go in the city centre unless you want a bottling
-the student area is purely students/the poor, and the poor welshies hate the students
-my mate had his vw golf keyed for being a student
-polish prostitutes for neighbours (although this could be a + for some) who play shit music
-not a blade of grass apart from in parks

Well I love living in Cardiff.  There are loads of parks, plenty of room for a good kickabout.  The uni has the best Inter mural football league in the country, with thirty two teams in it.  Student area by definition in of course mostly populated by students.  Clubs are good if you know the good ones, try Clwb Ifor Bach and Metros.  City centre is like any other on Saturday night, Swindon isnt exactly lovely, and more to the point neither is oxford.

I think the point is if you go for a job which requires a degree then the difference between a 2:1 at Southampton and a 2:1 at solent is great. They have quotos to fill so they mark things easier.

But for a job which doesn't need a degree you're absolutely right Piemonte. My housemates couldn't get a job last year as they had 2:2s (they temped all year), that's the extent of the amount of people going to uni.

Well the point of going to University (in my opinion), is to obtain a qualification which will probably land you up with a better chance of landing a decent and resonably high paid job with good prospects.

oops.   I missed that.  Its fucking raining in Cardiff, and has been since 1903.  Always dark.  Can't understand the locals.  No good beer.  I saw a shell suit the other day, someone was actually wearing it.  There are Cardiff City fans here.  The union has really big steps that take an age to get up.  The bar in the union is shit, and looks like ikea.  The kebabs are over priced and nasty.  Theft is high.  Halls of residence are shit holes.  It costs a fiver to cross the bridge if you drive.  The train station is horrible.  And most of all, I'm here, and I'm a cunt.

I think it's interesting that Cardiff has the first two letters that Calne does. So that makes it even shitter.

The uni's want you to believe that their name will help, but in my experience, in the real world that is not the case.
luckily its not the general public who will be hiring though. when a graduate is interviewed for a graduate position, the person interviewing them (if its a decent firm) will have a decent general knowledge of the university system and will have probably been through it themselves.

bascially you could work your arse off and get a 1st from a uni ranked outside the top 25 and be rejected, but a 2:2 from a well regarded one and they'll let you in. agreed that outside the top 8 or so uni's its much of a muchness, but the lower your uni down the tables past 25th-ish (where they start to go a bit shit) the less your degree is worth to someone who knows their stuff.

i've learnt recently though that the best way to get the job you want is to have contacts. someone with a 1st from oxford might get rejected from the 'big 5', but if you've got a 2:2 and have some contacts to get you a placement you're in there. the competition for 'work experience' at the big 5 is harder than getting an actual job.

and if everyone was thinking logically of course they'd employ the person who interviews best and would fit the role best, unfortunately there's alot of bullshit when it comes to recruitment and for the most competitive grad jobs going they have to split hairs and consider things like where you went to uni and how well regarded that uni is.

universities don't sell themselves on reputations (they do it on teaching, sports facilities, etc.) because they don't need to do that - employers do it for them with the selection measures mentioned.

General Studies is a joke. They never used to accept that

General Studies was my saviour a few years ago. Buggered up my A-Levels with a C,D,E, but my A in GS saved my Uni choices and I got to go where I wanted to (Lancaster University - an excellent choice for anyone needing a clearing option)

Always wanted to take a 5th A-Level to complete the set: A, B, C, D, E
