Shrimpers keeper Griemink to quit

Griemink struggled with knee problems after leaving Swindon
Southend keeper Bart Griemink, 34, is to retire because of a persistent knee injury, on the advice of a specialist.

The Dutchman has made 26 appearances since moving to Roots Hall from Swindon in the summer of 2004, following spells at Birmingham and Peterborough.

"I've had a bad time with knee injuries - the specialist has advised me to stop, or I could have problems in later life," he told the club website.

Meanwhile, the Shrimpers have released 34-year-old defender Andy Edwards.

Edwards recently spent three months on loan at Conference side Grays Athletic.

Shame to end his career that way.

Always though the Bart Man was an honest enough player, cracking shot stopper but never quite had the composure to be a brilliant keeper.

I'll never forget those blunders he made just as me and my mates got into the TE.

1st Minute Griemink as we used to call him.

Bit like Rhys Evans, niether can kick either.

Shame for his career to end like that. Was gonna start a thread asking if anybody would mind resigning him if rhys fucks off. Didn't realise he was injured.

Shae to end like that. He wasn't that bad really. Rhys rightly edged him out but I don't think there was a vast difference in quality between them at the time.
