Anyone seen it?

City of God is the cats whiskers.
After the success of City of God they made two series for TV and over 35 million Brazilians tuned in.
It's now out on DVD over here, it's called City of Men, and it's superb.
A warning for the less cultured among us - it's subtitled!

Do American films count as foreign? I realised my mistake as soon as I posted. Foreign language films if you please.

i thought that "open your eyes" the original spanish (subtitled in english) version of "vanilla Sky" was good. Haven't seen vanilla sky but apparently it doesn't compare.
Run Lola Run is another clever film. Again subtitled as it's in a foreign language (german) but still managers to keep you gripped

I've had City of God on DVD for ages, forgot about it until you posted this.
Amelie's excellent, I also enjoyed Nikita, Les Rivieres Pourpres, Run Lola Run and Le Grand Bleu is excellent.
I'm a bit of a Jean Reno fan!

Will make that a priority this weekend. Sonic, if you've got the DVD make sure you also watch the documentary thats in the extras 'News from a private war'. It's pretty hard hitting stuff to see it all happening for real. "This is the Brazillian Goodfellas. You won't see a more dazzling, compelling or emotionally affecting movie. Fight and you'll never survive, run and you'll never escape". Too fucking right. My favourite film of all time!

Well Das boot is excellent, better when it's not dubbed over and just subtitled, one of the best World War two films ever made in my view.

We wanna go somewhere else. We're not threatened by people anymore. All our insecurities have evaporated. We're in the clouds now. We're wide open. We're spacemen orbiting the earth. The world looks beautiful from here, man.

ireversible staring monica bellucci (like memento starts at the end etc) fantastic film very fucked up and has the infamous 13 minute rape scene which is very uncomfortable to watch!
battle royal (one of my favourite films ) the goverment is fed up with youth ruining the country so send a different classroom of kids every few weeks to a deserted island gives them each a rucksack with some weapons and basically the last one alive gets to go home. So just imagine if your tutor group at school was sent to an island and you had to kill all of them to get home again ! they also have necklaces which explode and kill them if they stay in one area for too long! it's very very funny! sick but genius!
