Chipboard flooring is usually 18mm or 22mm.

That's the problem with modern floors, big sheets of chip board are a nightmare to take up. Does sound like you have found a joist to drill into though.

Exactly this. I started off right in the corner and have moved in diagnoly about 4 inches (100mm Nev  Smiley ). 3 holes, no joy. (No puns please).
