I'm not for a minute suggesting she is being dishonest, nor the vast majority of self-employed people earning themselves a living. But there are a number exploiting loopholes in the system to avoid paying tax, and its this that the government (certainly the Tories) promised to investigate as part of their manifesto.
And they have also promised to look at the ridiculous amounts being paid in benefits to the downright lazy bastards who are twice as better off doing sod all than going to work. Let's hope this happens soon, because I'm sick and tired of my taxes going towards housing and paying people whose only contribution to society is to produce hoards of kids that we pay for! And to pick up on Si's point, my husband was self employed for a number of years in the building trade and found himself without work around 18 months ago for the first time ever. He wasn't even entitled to jobseekers allowance because he paid a lower rate of NI, so had no money coming in for several months until he found employed work.

Without finger-pointing at other groups in society who have it easier than you, point the finger where the problem is. HMRC have fucked up royally here, and should be held accountable and lots of their senior people should be fired.

If there was more for the government to pay back to taxpayers than the other way around do you think they would have told us?

Completely crap that so many mistakes appear to have been made, but what else can we expect in this age of general bureaucratic incompetence? That said, anybody who doesn't verify that their take home pay is in line with their tax coding wants their head looking at, in my opinion.

It was announced in Prime Ministers Question Time this morning that 4 million people will get rebates. 1.2 million have underpaid...anyone owing less than £300 will not have to pay...people owing more will have a higher tax code for two or three years to catch up with payments...no one will have to pay out in a lump sum....unless they have the means and would prefer too. 2 billion pounds will be collected..........about the same amount it cost Labour to put in the SUPER DUPER computer that fucked it all up in the first place!

Around this time, people had 2 tax codes in one year after Gordon Brown backtracked on the 10p tax fiasco. That probably hasn't helped.
