In management you don't need to know how do do something specific. Just manage someone who does.

There are two types of managers. Ones who let their staff get on and do what they are paid to do without interfering all the time and those who cannot.

In my experience those that cannot leave their staff to get on with their job are the ones who actually have no idea of whats involved in a job.

When I was manager of a small (10 person) computer department I could do all the jobs so knew what to expect and timescales/problems. Each person was a specialist in their own field so I left them to get on with it.
