Title: Gillingham v Swindon Town - Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Private Fraser on Tuesday, August 16, 2016, 09:27:48
It seems that matchday apathy has started early this season.  Almost 10:30 and nobody else could be arsed to start the thread.

The score could be almost anything tonight, but the second part of it is almost certain to be "Nil".  Let's at least hope we don't pick up any more injuries.

I thought it would quite apt not to bother at all....we're already into Brent band style Foregone Conclusion territory.

I'm in the home end for this one, so hopefully we don't embarrass ourselves. Gillingham have started really well and are full of confidence. We'll probably do better if they play their own game rather than stifle us a la Chesterfield. Still think we'll lose though, same scoreline as Saturday

Be amazed if it's anything other than a home win. Could be a heavy one as well if we're on the back foot for large periods. Ropey defence and no outlet up front, 3-0.

4-0 Gills, owing to our lack of defenders, lack of defensive competence regardless, and having no strikers.

We've won there once in my life time  :(

That was a team that included the likes of Fraser, Colin Calderwood, Tim Parkin, Chalkie, Jimmy Quinn and Alan Mac.

No Priestfield is a graveyard.....it's early doors, but avoiding a complete Scunny/Fleetwood style tonking, would be something.

Pre match pondering of a 4-6-0 formation in The White Swan, Islington.

Gillingham doesn't have a JDW which just illustrates the uncivilized nature of the place.

Looking forward to a night out under the stars in the temporary stand which is now 13 years old.
I'm guessing that there aren't many permanent structures in Gillingham.

Need the spirit of 86/87 tonight.
Last win here Dec 86, when we played on both 26th & 27th.

Similar to the game last season, the team's chances appear to have been written off and there won't be a howling gale to even things up.

So I'm off to find some lucky heather.

Starting XI: Vigouroux, Thomas, Thompson (C), Sendles-White, Furlong, Doughty, Rodgers, Ormonde-Ottewill, Barry, Goddard, Brophy

Subs: Henry, Evans, Smith, Stewart, Iandolo, Twine, Hylton

That looks like the dreaded 4-6-0 to me, unless you count Goddard as the lone front man in a 3-6-1

Powers laughable transfer policy will eventually see us relegated.

The current situation is unacceptable- and could have been wholly avoided if we had been prepared properly for the season as he promised we would be back in April.

So it's Power's fault that key players get injured at the same time now?

Maybe it's all part of his plan not to have to pay them appearance fees and goal bonuses?

Take four key players out of any League One team and they are going to look a lot weaker.

In fairness we have known we would have no striker today for days. Could be a 4-3-3 with Boo/JSW/Thompson/Barry at the back, Rodgers/Doughty/Thomas in the midfield with Brophy and Furlong as wingers either side of a withdrawn Goddard up top. Probably the best we could do with the players available.

Kasim absence worries me.

Young not on the bench either? No harm taking him out of the spotlight but after starting at the weekend i thought he would have been on the bench.

The injuries are unfortunate and I hope players take their chances this evening.

All of this is a sign of the times as squads simply are not assembled in July for the pre-season team photo any more.

The best lower league transfer deals seem to emerge closer to the window, sometimes we've got to brave a weaker squad until then...........

Been the same for a few years now and Power is just the latest thing they've been able to latch on to, they actually seem to enjoy it when the club struggles.

I dare not ever move my season ticket for fear of who I might end up being near (not that many of the protagonist's actually go to games.

Things looked very ominous when we lined up, but it's a very good performance all things considered.

Gills had all the ball and territory first 30 without really threatening, apart from one JET meltdown where he tried to walk it into the net. Classic JET. During that spell we defended well but had nothing at all in the final third of the pitch. The ball does not stick to Goddard at all.

From 30 mins, it seemed they were fed up of our rearguard action and tried to draw us out. Stopped pressing, stopped committing as many bodies forward. We shifted 15 yards up the pitch and look so much better when we're not forced to go long to a pretend striker. Best move of the half saw Brophy put Goddard in, but the keeper just got enough on it and it was cleared off the line.

Back three look fine. BOO and Brophy played like they'd never met for the first 30 but improved slightly. Brophy was 2015 version for most of the half. Furlong and Barry on the other side much better. Doughty the stand out player for sure in terms of quality.

All in all, endeavour is there. Quality is lacking slightly but when we move up the pitch we look capable of creating problems. Still would bite your hand off for a draw.

Plenty of the walking wounded here. Seen Kasim and Obika for sure. Also, always interesting sitting in the comps with scouts scribbling away. I can't confirm or deny Rodgers is a wanted man...

There's definitely something bubbling inside this Town set-up, which is what makes it all so frustrating. A few extra players and little luck with injuries and we'll be just fine.

Williams: Satisfying because Gillingham side good. Especially with a couple of players out.

Hylton didn't enjoy playing up top on his own. Goddard a bit more comfortable receiving goal kicks, etc.

Found a bit more space after half time as players tired. Tried two pronged attack down wings. Brophy could have even won it.

Stewart has worked hard over summer after settling in troubles and has shown us he wants to be part of it.

7 mins - I'm sure the ref will explain it!

First BOO yellow a bit soft, second one a booking and he had to go off.

Think Vigs has really stepped up since he has come back.

Hope this has shown (the players) we can play in a different way as we looked lost v Chesterfeld without hold up man up front.

Yasser - close to playing. Tight in groin. Nothing in scan, but didn't want to risk it.
Norris - good steady progress. Should keep him out too long.

Delfounso - considering an offer we've put on the table
Another? which would be very important to us..

Formation worked well, looked fairly solid in defence.

Doughty MoM

I'm liking Jordan Stewart.

The seats in the away end were fucking filthy.
It's no way to treat guests.

Furlong Snr was sat with us.
Still looks as if he could do a job out on the pitch.
Early impressions are that his son could turn out be a decent signing.

Enjoyed that. Didn't let Gills play first half, really went for them second. Worth a point, could have lost it, could have won it. Considering we had no strikers we looked extremely dangerous on the counter 2nd half.

Sat in the home end so was interesting to watch Town as an opposition. Very frustrating to play against, and you could feel them shit themselves when we broke forward. Vigs wound them up big time as well, without even really doing anything.

Really impressed with Stewart when he came on. Goddard, Barry, Doughty, Thompson, JSW all pretty solid. Furlong was pretty impressive and looks to have something about him, great run for the penno. BOO didn't have a good game. Caught out too often and two daft yellows.

After 4 games it looks like Chesterfield was a one off, but a lot to work on definitely. Gillingham look a very good outfit, their RB in particular was very dangerous so a point with 10 men and 3 big players missing is a cracking return.

Think Vigs has really stepped up since he has come back.
Even if he did cost £400k which I know is doubtful it's looking like a bargain now, been top notch so far and looks to have all the attributes a keeper needs. The fact he seems to be able to wind up the opposition fans no end is obviously a bonus.

Said to to dad once the team was announced that we must have a specific plan, it's just not a team you'd put out and hope for the best with.

We sure did, Gillingham didn't quite know what to make of us and we ultimately came away with a very well deserved point.

Stewart could really start to shine soon, with an Obika or a Norris to work off of he could cause some real problems, a massive plus so far this season.

Furlong looked the part, won almost everything in the air and was our 'out' ball from goal kicks which weren't too bad tonight, at least if they weren't exactly on the money they were into touch which under circumstances we find ourselves in really isn't a bad thing.

Been pondering the new loan rules lately and hopefully we're having our bad luck with injuries at the right time, at least we can do something about it at this stage - whether or not we do is up to you to decide depending on which side of the Power fence you like to sit...

My point is that at some point this season most sides will find themselves short and with no emergency loans permitted there will be very little they can do.  We're making a very conscious decision to get the younger players time on the pitch - I think we'd be doing the same even with a full compliment - which may well be invaluable as the season wears on.

Most League 1 teams simply cannot afford to have the type of experienced quality we'd all like to have at more of a squad level rather than first team level, the loan system has always been there to temporarily bridge this gap when injuries deplete squads and it will be very interesting to see how teams adjust.  You'd need to have the kind of luck Leicester had last season with injuries to be on a high all season.

Anyway, if the 4 points had come from a win against Cov, a draw at Chesterfield and a loss tonight people would be relatively satisfied so I'm going to remain optimistic as always.

Vigs was worth the 400k just for winding up the Gills fans. The ones around me were going absolutely mental at him, I was telling a few of them 'you know this is how he wants you to react?'. He obviously likes being the pantomime villain. I was having a chuckle to myself though, it was hilarious.

Gotta say too, we dealt with JET extremely well. They were all banging on about him before the game and he didn't have a sniff. Thompson did him a few times.

Still pretty chuffed. The boys put in a shift and massive credit to Luke Williams who had a very clever game plan and showed up a lot of Town fans.

If everyone is fully fit, Stewart is pushing Goddard hard for that starting slot at 10. Looks a different player. So deceptively quick, strong and technical in his cameo last night.

Agree, that run just after he came on when he had 3 Gillingham players pressing him for about 40 yards before he drew the foul was class. He looked very handy.

From the little everyone has seen of Stewart the consensus seems to be that he should be in the team... So why isn't he? Is it a case of a a player who is considered better when he's on the bench or is there something else at play? Maybe he's shit in training and the club don't want to give him a a chance if he hasn't shown he deserves it in training?

All a bit mysterious

Think it's simply they're trying to look after him....sometimes it can take a while for a player to develop and find a role.

No one has seen enough of him to think he should be starting week in week out. He looked completely average in his cameos last year, but has started this season very well after his first proper preseason. In my mind he's behind Goddard for the 10, but pushing hard and is an excellent option off the bench, which is great progress.

Great point last night, pleasantly suprised to see the back line hold solid and a change to counter-attacking work, after trying to play through Chesterfield on Saturday, which didn't work......on Stewart, wonder if mgt will give him his place in the starting line up in a home game, maybe (and understandbly) still wrapping him in cotton wool a bit after last season. Thought there were glimpses of him combining well with Iandolo when the latter came on, words I thought I'd never write. Worth a try playing off the shoulder of Obika / Norris when they come back? Anyhow great save from Vigs at point blank range probably earned the point ultimately. Doughty MoM but Nathan T great game as well. Onwards and upwards.

Said cameo at Millwall. It wasn't hard to do quite well off the bench that game.

My point is that we haven't seen enough for him to be a started, but he's showing a lot of promise at this early stage.
