Title: Historic Pub crawl of London
Post by: donkey on Monday, September 7, 2015, 16:42:44
I'm thinking of organising an historic pub crawl of London for a small group.  Based on my internet research I can sort something out, but thought it pertinent to ask if anyone on here has any suggestions (to go to or avoid) based on experience.

Cheers in advance.

There's the Blind Beggar in Whitechapel where the Krays used to frequent, some guy got murdered in it - that's quite historic ?

Also (apparently) the place where there was a speech that led to the creation of the Salvation Army...somewhat differing claims to fame. :)

Edit: That's just the sort of thing, thanks chap.

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese in Fleet Street. One of the oldest pubs in the City.

Prospect of Whitby in Wapping is brilliant, all full of pirate and shipping memorabilia, but I think it's real stuff not just themed.
Overlooks the Thames
Would have recommended it first but couldn't remember the name, so had to look it up !

Should be top of your list

You could try the Rochester Castle in Stoke Newington, which is apparently the oldest Wetherspoons still open.

Wetherspoons tend to be based in old buildings, so if you wanted historical architecture or something like that you could easily go to 'spoons.

Some of 'em are shit holes obviously though.

Princess Louise in Holborn and Jerusalem Tavern in Farringdon. The Mayflower in Rotherhithe is visible across the river from the Prospect of Whitby.

You could try the Holborn Whippet, brews commemorative beer for the London Beer flood of 1814

The BBC recently covered pubs that are now listed. The London pubs are at the bottom of the article and all worth a visit

The Jamaica Wine House in the city is also worth considering

This is a great pub.

Last time I visited was about 30 years ago, but assuming it is still open.

I would have said Dirty Dicks in Bishopsgate, but think it's being renovated and lost a lot of its character now. Such a shame.

This thread makes me sad. We are moving offices from historic Fleet Street to soulless Canary Wharf when I get back from my holidays :(

Cheers for all the advice. The telegraph site was going to be my starting point, but thought it prudent to seek local knowledge.

I've done the same route, but couldn't tell you if any of the pubs were any good. I was out of it after about number 8.
