Title: Booze at football
Post by: Bob's Orange on Thursday, September 26, 2013, 15:09:38
I generally don't drink inside the CG so don't actually know the answer to this surprisingly, but can you drink at football these days?

The reason I ask is that me and 4 mates are going to Millwall v Leeds on Saturday (shame Swindon are away :( ) and one of them asked if you can drink at the ground and it got me thinking that I wasn't totally sure.

Got my tin hat for Saturday!  :pint:

It depends.

Yes you can drink. As long as a) the stand has a licence b) you do so in the designated areas. There is some stupid rule that you can't drink in sight of the pitch or some such nonsense.

Both times I've been to New Den (once with Swindon), drink was available to be consumed in the concourse - plastic bottle bollocks though...

Yes,  alcohol will be available in the concourse bars at the New Den.  The police/local authority along with the home club do sometimes order to not sell beer in the away sections for 'high risk' games such as a Millwall vs Leeds one but it'll be okay where you are sitting down the opposite end from the visiting support.  The New Den compared to their old ground is like chalk and cheese as far as intimidation is concerned.  That atmosphere should be quite lively though.

Are we converting you Bovis ? Seem to be hanging around a bit after the game?

You should go to one of our away games bovis, we don't  often wait long getting a half time beer! Unlike when we took 6-7 k to Fulham in the cup. I'm still spitting feathers from that, you must get it all the time, big queues , no chance of a beer?

Say what you like about Fulham, its the only place I have ever got a free pie.

Very rarely drink inside grounds tbh. Overpriced and plazzy glasses.  Normally well lagered up pre-match to see the whole match through.  :)  Bloomin' media took over that Bar 71 too on Tuesday.

Drinking at football is standard around most grounds.

I always thought the reason that STFC had a conservative approach to drinking at football, was because of the influence of the Arkell family...they wanted punters drinking before and after in their establishments and not during, conditions laid down in return for chucking a few bob our way in the early years.

I've just read an article saying that the ban from having alcohol in your seats was passed in 1985. They said that the stupid thing is you can watch London Irish at the Madejski with a beer in your seat but not at a Reading game. The chairman at Ipswich is trying to get this revoked.

A few small bottles of coke, dispense with some, fill with vodka, job done. No one ever checks

This goes back to the (mistaken) belief that (all) egg-chasing fans are better behaved than (all) football fans and can therefore be trusted to take alcohol to their seats.

But then again, you can take alcohol to your seat at a cricket match and they can last for up to 8 hours.  It can sometimes get a bit lairy as the day goes on and the drink takes affect.

It's allowed at football matches on the Continent, isn't it?

At PSV Eindhoven and Cologne I was able to have beer at my seat.

Although when I was at PSV v Feyenoord it was only non-alcoholic beer.

Non-alcoholic beer is like licking your sister’s pussy. It tastes the same but it’s not right.

And you know how the latter tastes............
Non alcoholic beer tastes a bit like cabbage.

In Germany they serve it to you on the terraces - via ladies walking round with glasses in hand

Was out there a few weeks ago, they walk around with Jetpack like bags on their backs and just top your glasses up. It's ideal at E2.40 a go!

Must admit that I never saw the need to drink alcohol at a football match. I found a much more pressing need for something hot to keep out the chill! On the few occasion when I'd had a beer before the game, I found that I spent more time in the loo rather than watching the game!

Few seasons back, I felt the need for more drinks during the match to stop me sobering up.

We played some awful matches then
