Title: Players
Post by: Bob's Orange on Wednesday, August 21, 2013, 12:18:51
Are we likely to see the players we need to get off the wage list out of the club before the closure of the transfer window, which I believe closes the end of August.

Caddis to Millwall for a fee?
Benson on loan to Luton with Luton picking up some of the wage?
Navarro to Sainsburys?

Anyone else? Power said yesterday that we can't get anyone in until we move these players on. Is McEveley one we want to move on as well?

McEveley has a squad number so I think they may hang on to him for another year or so. Or maybe it's a ploy to try and up our bargaining power for any potential suitors.

I had a quick look on his twitter last night and it sounds like he is fit, just waiting for an opportunity.

I knew about Cox but he is long term injured so nothing we can do with him at the moment.

I'm not too sure about that, Cox fell out with the Italian, went on loan to Oxford and Plymouth both of whom wanted to buy him - both sets of fans were very impressed - perhaps when he is fit he may get another chance of staking a claim.

Cox picked up an injury at Plymouth thta was going to keep him out for quite a while, think he was expected to miss first few months of the season, still odd he's not been given a squad number though cant be on that high a wage surely

I based my assumption on the fact he hasn't been issued a squad number at all, both McEveley and TAH were injured and weren't expected to be fit for kick-off but were assigned numbers.

Cox seems like an asset we can sell on so that makes me wonder if he'll be on his way too

I can't see Caddis moving and I have to say its utter madness that we've exiled him.

If we are paying him a fortune why not play the bugger.  There's no questioning his ability and his value and stock are only going to decline while he's gathering dust.

Same with Benson.  He may not be part of our plans but he's a solid pro and would be a decent option to bring off the bench.  That said if he's off to Luton its irrelevant.

I agree, but last time this came up the only explanation that seemed plausible was that they either had:
 1) Too big an appearance/win bonus
 2) A trigger clause that if they reached N appearances they'd get an option of another year.
3*) The club are heaping pressure on them accepting a move by sending them to Coventry Northampton
4) "Not sure if true or not, but I heard that he has said he wont play for us again, his choice." - as plausible I suppose, blows apart my "professionalism" thoughts!

* I'd imagine this would be a bit dodgy/grounds for a constructive dismissal case?

Either way I can't see Jed's footballing reason being anything like true personally.

Its true we don't want uncommitted players at the club, my problem is that I haven't seen Benson or Caddis be anything other than professional. But I can see an issue would come should they leave in one of the windows (loan, perm) -  we'd then need to bed someone else in to cover.

Seems a bit of a cutting your nose off situation to me.

Also TAH and McEveley seem to have been frozen out a bit too. Maybe that's not a correct assumption.

I think that's just fitness, they missed pre-season but we've no reserve team in order for them to gain match fitness. Troy has been on the bench (as our only other CB I suppose) and McEveley has played for the development squad.

Confident they'll feature at some point this season, I'd like to see Troy prove his worth on the pitch.

Well, if true, it would be pretty clear gross misconduct and we could fire him, but I'm going to go ahead and guess that we still think we'll get a fee for him.

Of course, we could do a Chelsea/Mutu and fire him and then sue him for his own value.

I dont know if he did anything nasty to himself but he was certainly nasty to us that day. Ripped us to shreds, and then got the opportunity to do it again for Forest at the City Ground when they stuffed us 7-1. Hated him after that, always seemed to do well against us.

the loan bit worries me, seems less likely they will buy him when they see what he's like! hopefully a season long loan as opposed to a short term one.

Leave us a little short tomo though as Ranger isn't fit enough to start. Could there be an incoming forward today, otherwise its Storey up top, with Pritchard one side and who the other side?

I thought Williams would be next out the door.  I know it hasn't been going great for him,  but very disappointed to see him go. It really feels that they don't want anyone left from the Di Canio era at all?   They must have someone else lined up as we can't be relying solely on Ranger?

Would have made more sense to wait until the beginning of next week, so we had time to replace him instead of the day before we play.

In relation to Reis, I've heard he's out until Christmas, but seen nothing reported officially, so not sure how true that is.

Power has said 1 out 1 in, ergo Williams goes, Hateley comes in.  I recall watching Hateley play a couple of times in the SPL, the camera unfortunhately picking out dad in the sparse crowd....my impression was Tom would have got nowhere near pro football without the family connection....maybe he was just having off days.

If its 1 in 1 out they are not going to replace Williams with a midfield player unless there is another departure (Benson) that we can replace with a forward.

Given Williams likely wages, i'd of though we may be able to get 2 in to replace him, which adds to the reasons why getting him out was good business.

Guess they are the high earners though aren't they so unsurprising they've now mostly been moved on.

Weren't we linked with Harry Kane earlier in the season?

According to my Fm11 game, he is a beast of a striker. That's the extent of my knowledge.

No chance of Kane, he is the 3rd choice striker at Spurs and even if he slipped down their pecking order he wouldn't touch league 1 on loan.

11/2 for relegation seems a very good price at the moment.

I don't think the chances of us going down have increased because Andy "1 goal in 13 games" Williams has left.

Think it's more a case of not wanting anyone from the Di Canio era as they don't sit with the new wage structure,  vast differences in salary aren't going to encourage squad unity.

Sad to see Williams go but not surprised as just not been the player he was pre-injury,  said before he is like Michael Owen and seems terrified to challenge which never going to work in the third division.

I was surprised to read that they gave Benson a two and half year deal until I noticed he is only 33, strange that Paolo gave him such a deal for essentially half a season as he never really seemed to think he was good enough for this division?

And he's a midfielder, of which we already have enough I would have thought?

Although he can play full back.

There's is a school of thought that some managers/DoF's have a completely irrrational desire to collect certain types of player and overlook the glaringly obvious needs elsewhere...eg Wilson collected left backs, even Barca, seem unable to acquire a centre half, preferring to collect midfielders and play them as centre half.

Power may just have a thing for midfielders...perhaps he wanted to be one himself.

And herein lies the problem with Jed and why people will get pissed off with him.  He wants to be centre of attention and one of the lads.  In order to engage with people he gives out information to get them interested, some of it might be true, some might not. Either way he shouldn't be doing it.

I really don't rate him but if his role is simply to hold the ball up, provide some strength as a battering ram and bring others into play then fair enough but we need to hope that we'll get lots of goals from out wide.

Although, similar to Ranger he's mostly at a higher level so his record might not be much to read into - he did score 4 in 7 at Charlton in L1 a couple of years back.

A lot of people are looking at players goal scoring records and of course for a striker this is pretty important!! However with the way we play I think goalscoring isn't the be all and end all. Yesterday gills pushed up giving fods no option but to punt it long. This is where ranger comes into his own, winning headers to try and win possession, if storey was up front we'd have given the ball to gillingham every time.

Ranger had no clear cut chances yesterday, however Nathan Thompson who scored also had 2 or 3 good opportunities. I'm not sure  goalscorers are that important in this style of football.

Title: Re: Players
Post by: Benzel on Sunday, August 25, 2013, 11:24:45
I agree, we'll see a few from Pritch, Luongo and Mason. Who knows, if Byrne adopts the more advanced role maybe he'll get a couple more, he was getting into positions around the box yesterday. Plus I'm sure Reis will provide assists and Ranger will score a few. The one effort he did have that was blocked for a corner certainly looked goal bound from where I was sitting, plus a sharper, fitter Ranger probably wouldn't have fluffed his touch in the box on the odd occasion he did.

If we are, indeed, in some of transfer limbo, it will be because of the salary cap.

Hence the one in, one out statement.

With Benson now off the books it should open up the opportunity to bring someone else in.

That is why getting the likes of Caddis off the paylist is so important

With Williams & Benson now gone I would expect 2 new signings maybe 3 if Caddis goes too before the window shuts.

Probably Hateley, N'Guessan and another striker.
