Title: Football league awards
Post by: Swindon Please Win on Sunday, March 11, 2012, 13:17:01
They are tonight for some reason. Hopefully Matt Ritchie can win it, but Marlon Pack did look quality yesterday.

But why have the awards now? with 10 or so games to go. It's just stupid.

Worse than that they have to be voted on before the end of December apparently.

Might be wrong, but aren't they for 2011?

Also thought Cheltenham's full back (Lowe?) was very good - don't think Rooney got past him very often.

Rooney didn't give him a lot to do once Lowe figured out that Rooney would pick the ball up and cut inside every time

The fact that he's not even the clear cut choice to win our own player of the year (I think I'll probably vote McCormack, for example) is a testament to how good a season this has been.

Post by: Nemo on Sunday, March 11, 2012, 22:29:46
McCormack's adapted brilliantly, but Caddis has had a brilliant season and was ever present until this weekend.

Our upturn of form can be traced almost perfectly to the arrival of one Wesley Foderingham.

And the unbeaten run started pretty much the moment Benson arrived.

So many candidates, it seems unfair to even try to pick one.

Are these calender year rather than season?

Which makes little sense as we spent some in L1 and less in L2. I dunno why I think they are, something about Simon Cox goal Vs Walsall not being nominated because it was in January or something the other year.

Great effort from Ritchie. For those that knock him for having quiet games every now and again, it is worth remembering that other sides come to play us, set up to nullify him.  McCormack has been exceptional, but at centre back his role is more reactionary and he is naturally going to be more consistent. The fact Ritchie has been as potent as he has, when he has been double marked half the time makes his impact all the more impressive. It is a well deserved award. Now sign that contact extension...

Richie is a match winner and creative. Easy to see why he gets the attention he does. He's also the player who is worth the most(if he was for sale of course)
Macca deffo would get the nod for player of the year currently, but its nice to have plenty of players in the running who i wouldn't begrudge winning it.

We've had so many seasons where our player of the year was so hard to pick - because there was no-one deserving of the award.  We've also had some years when one player stood out by a mile - the Parkin years.  Its great to have a hard choice because so many have been consistently good.

Yesterday is a perfect example of that. Mark Yeats said in his post match interview that he dropped their regular left back to bring in Jombati specifically to counter Ritchie's threat.

45 appearances, 10 goals, 14 assists, and interest from the rest of the Football League.

By way of comparison, Pack has 42 appearances, 4 goals and 7 assists. Maybe that's unfair, as I don't know what type of player he is. However, nobody at Cheltenham has more than 8 assists, and none of their midfielders is into double figures for goals.

This annoys me. How do Cheltenham fans (apart from 2 games) know what Matt Ritchie has done this year?

Likewise, had Pack won the award, it would annoy me if anyone on here moaned about 'what Marlon Pack has done this year'.

Fans don't know anything about other team's players so these comments are completely stupid!

The bad news is that Pack has agreed to join Swindon in the summer. Deal is as good as done and will sign a three year deal.
