Title: Wes foderingham
Post by: LittleRed on Sunday, January 1, 2012, 18:27:07
Anyone know how likely the permanent deal for him is. I thought we might have heard something by now. Last I knew of was the two clubs had agreed a fee and talks were at an advanced stage. Bit worried things hav not progressed.

I don't think anyone knows any more that that. Or if they do they are keeping tight lipped.

Hope it happens and quickly. I'd settle for a season long loan extension. I'm paranoid someone from a higher league is going to gazump us.

He made a few good saves yesterday, including a blinder from that header. So important to our promotion bid.

Freedman seems happy for him to join us, but as Batch says we could get gazumped by a bigger club.

In DRS we trust!

It should be noted that Speroni was missing from Palace's squad v Millwall, Saturday, with Price in goal, they had a sub keeper Fitzsimmons, which adds fuel to the belief, they're happy to let Foderingham go.

This is a great signing. Best keeper I've seen here since Digby. Better than 1st season Lucas and early Brez. Unless Palace are complete imbeciles I'd expoect there to be a great big sell on clause. The only one concern I have is that we've not seen him have a bad one - will his confidence hold up? Its bloody good to have a more than decent keepr thuogh.

Think he has 9 in 15 games for us.

Not sure of the record.

Think the record is 22 in a league season in 1968-9, not 100% sure of that though.

At the risk of getting too statto-esque our defense overall this season has been historically good so far. Our 12 clean sheets are the most in four English leagues, and in terms of goals conceded per game we are tied with Liverpool and Charlton for the best record in the country at 0.79.

If we keep this up it will be our third best ever defensive season after '68-9 and '95-6.

Title: Re: Wes foderingham
Post by: Notts red on Tuesday, January 3, 2012, 11:10:02
Not a bad record for someone who until a few months ago had'nt even played a league game. Don't think Flint had any league experience before he came to us either but now both IMO would be comfortable in league one.

Title: Re: Wes foderingham
Post by: Peter Venkman on Tuesday, January 3, 2012, 11:30:41
For us as a team to have only conceded 19 goals so far is incredible, to put this into context .....Creepy Crawley who are currently top have conceded 18 goals in JUST away games and have conceded 29 in total.

An excellent defensive record so far, and we so rarely look like conceding more than 1 goal in any game we play.

Wes in his time with us has probably stopped 20+ shots that many other keepers would probably have let in. Obviously this is surmising but IMO he is the best keeper we have had since the Digby era and maybe even better than him.....eventually.

Title: Re: Wes foderingham

For us as a team to have only conceded 19 goals so far is incredible,

Especially when 6 of those were in August, 6 in September, and a further 3 against Hereford!

Put another way, we have conceded 4 in our last 12 league matches.

Wes in his time with us has probably stopped 20+ shots that many other keepers would probably have let in. Obviously this is surmising but IMO he is the best keeper we have had since the Digby era and maybe even better than him.....eventually.

As somebody else said recently, the only thing we haven't seen is how he reacts to making a mistake. ALL keepers do so at some point.

Agree with everything you said mind.

Title: Re: Wes foderingham
Post by: Peter Venkman on Tuesday, January 3, 2012, 11:57:28
Thats very true, we haven't seen if he will collapse when he has made an error as Smith has done in the past, but judging by how his demeanour is on the pitch, I would say that confidence won't be a problem for him.

And conceding just 4 goals in 12 matches is absolutely stunning.

Title: Re: Wes foderingham
Post by: Batch on Tuesday, January 3, 2012, 12:09:13
And conceding just 4 goals in 12 matches is absolutely stunning.

And its only a slightly worse 7 in 16 since the Hereford game in all competitions.

Title: Re: Wes foderingham
Post by: Peter Venkman on Tuesday, January 3, 2012, 12:14:34
Obviously the defence has had a massive influence on the amount of goals conceded as well but you cannot underestimate the effect of Wes coming in and the confidence he inspires in the defenders in front of him.

I do think that he will be the best signing we have made all season.

Title: Re: Wes foderingham
Post by: DA15red on Tuesday, January 3, 2012, 12:26:49
The defence does also take a lot of the credit but last year and earlier in the season Smith etc. were prone to at least one calamity per game. They didnt always result in goals but you could never relax!

They way i've read it over the last few days is that Wes is going to sign in this window.

A virus is normally out of a persons system within about 48 hours.

So I guess it's possible Palace may delay the transfer until their keeper is fit, if he doesn't make their next game recall Wes for that one game then let the transfer go through.

That would be worst case senario I would think.

It would need to be a fucking big virus to call off the transfer completely...

Title: Re: Wes foderingham

The earliest he'd be able to play for palace would be in the league cup next week anyway, by which point you'd assume any virus would be long gone.

Lets just give the Man a great ovation Saturday when he takes up his place in front of the TE.

The deal is done. Wes wants to sign for us because he is settled at this club.  There is nothing sinister about this transfer except the paperwork needs to be completed by Palace before the club can officially announce the deal

Let's hope he is having his photo done with his scarf held high above his head. Or I could just be completely wrong and it's just me wanting to believed that's what's happening !

Just spoke to a Eagle fan and he knows a few youth players at Palace, they are convinced Wes is to sign however he wants a release clause in the contract should we not be promoted and also a minimum transfer trigger fee should a bigger club come in as well as a buy back clause? Imagine this is accurate info, mates normally spot on when it comes to Palace transfer news. I think we should get him on loan and then sign when he is out of contract, still think Palace are waiting on theyre keepers fitness as well. Worrying all the same that no deal has been signed.

I really hope that's not true. I'd naively hoped that we had banished the greed from the club with the preseason cull. Hoped that we had a group of players together who wanted to work as a team, rather than using their situation as a stepping stone to something better. Oh well.

Of course it's bollocks. I have a friend who's a fan of Man U, he doesn't know anymore about contract negotiations with "their players" than my dogs. He just happens to read the forums and believe the 80%.

If this did happen to be true i wouldnt have a problem with a deal like that.

The only things that matters this season is going up and having Wes between the sticks helps our chances massively, do whatever it takes to get him signed and then worry about the contract clauses after we get promoted.

Quick fixes never last though, do they. Surely it is more important to secure the deal properly and have the future plans for the club on the right track.

Hopefully it's all shite anyhow.

That seems rather risky. Either Swindon try it keep it on the downlow and Crystal Palace just announce it on their site anyway, or Swindon don't sign until tomorrow which leaves another club open to make a bid.

Quote
Swindon Town have signed goalkeeper Wes Foderingham from Crystal Palace on a two-and-a-half year contract.

The 20-year old joins the Robins for an undisclosed fee and is available for tomorrow's FA Cup third round tie with Wigan Athletic.

Foderingham first joined the club on loan from the Eagles in October and kept a clean sheet on his debut in a 2-0 away at Accrington Stanley.

He went on to keep a further seven clean sheets before the year was out - helping the Robins secure a place in the play-off places as 2011 came to a close with a 2-1 win at Northampton Town.

Foderingham told Swindontownfc.co.uk: "It's great to have everything sorted now.

"The main thing for me is to be playing first team football and I have really enjoyed my time at Swindon so far.

"I am really pleased to have the deal all sorted and I am looking forward to trying to help the team win promotion this season."

A video interview with the 'keeper is now available to view on STFC Player, the club's online TV service.

The club are expecting to receive Football League authorisation for the deal on Monday morning.
