Title: Can you hear thetownend.com sing?
Post by: walrus on Thursday, November 10, 2011, 12:51:12
Is it me, or has this place become really quiet?  It used to be the thing that kept me going through the working day.  Now I have to rely on Twitter and Facebook, but Twitter is good for five minutes and Facebook is rubbish as I have desperately dull friends.

I appreciate last season many wanted to forget they were Town fans for six days of the week, and some may have even have chose to end it all as we plummeted back to the basement division.  However, those of us that are left are mysteriously quiet during an decent season where we should be having enthusiastic debates about the aerodynamic benefits of Kerrouche's pate or the relative merits of di Canio's choice of outfit on matchday.

Even the Friday joke thread is decidedly quiet...  Mind you, when I have tried to post a funny, I'm chastised for being too rude!  Since when was there a line on the townend.com?!  The beauty of thetownend.com was it was a no-holds-barred celebration of masculatinity and all things bollocks, and only a select number of mongs were allowed through at any one time to suffer a barrage of abuse.

Perhaps we need more rival fans on here?  Maybe I should post a link on Ox?

It's because we're doing well - there's nothing to moan about.

I blame Di Canio / Diamandis / Twitter / Leon Knight / Leon Clarke / Michael Rose / Malpas.

It started going a bit quieter around the time we started winning games.  Town fans obviously like a good moan.

It also doesn't help that a few of the key posters from last season have moved on.

We have to have something to split the fanbase,  if it's not the performance on the pitch then let it be the puns.

I think we need inspiration for new threads instead of recycling the same ones! Maybe another stunners thread,  but whilst there is no euro/world cup on we could do one for the town/city we are playing each week. Make it a league system.

4D - it has to be safe for work though...  I'm too cool to have time for thetownend.com when I'm at home.

Nothing wrong with a few puns - I have to confess to the odd giggle.

First observation is that Swindon have 2 main forums, this one & thisisstfc. Other Clubs just have the one main forum - Our Yellow friends.
If you amalgamated into one then this would increase the content.
Also as stated things are steady at present and moving in right direction.
A new ground, player, big game announcement etc all increase activity.

I find myself reading the forum regularly but seldom write as much as I used to. I love reading the live match reads after the games but don't actively participate in these as I am usually at the games. The match reads are great and make me smile (only if we win).

Finally after all of these years I remain a miserable git after we lose and wish I could shrug my shoulders and walk away from the ground without any care, but Sundays I can be moody when we lose and even into Monday. Tuesday I am O.K..............On the other hand 1600 + games now and I still get a buzz.

What we need to do is split pun threads into two- one for puns, one for reasonable discussion.

I'll be honest and say I like the puns. Although one more Fish thread would be the end of it...

I found a forum with a Topic called "Stupid Questions" Made for an interesting read... Maybe we need a few more threads?

Quotes from "Stupid Questions" thread.

Do infants enjoy infancy as much as adults enjoy adultery?
How do you tell when you run out of invisible ink?
When you open a tin of evaporated milk, why is there still milk inside?
If you travel in a car at the speed of light do your headlights work?
If olive oil comes from olives where does baby oil come from?

Permission to start such a thread?

Many people who i have spoke to have said the pun threads really annoy them.Alot of threads you can look at the title and decide if you read it or not but it's got to a stage where nearly every thread you read is derailed.

Then on top of that we have a element of posters on here who are just interested in posting negative shit for the sake of it. It's been described at times as a tef meltdown and that is exactly how it is.The element of supporters who went on one when dicanio was appointed always seem to resurface when we lose, flammable ben being a prime example.

Play shit and write shit i can understand that but people moaning for the sake of moaning gets very boring to be honest

I like the forum. I use it mainly to find out information about the football team as living abroad, this is probably the best way of learning information about transfers, matches bar none.

I do also enjoy the non-football topics, and have to confess find the puns amusing, however can see why it would annoy people.

The thing to remember is that everyone is different and has different tastes. I think this forum covers a broad spectrum of football and non-football banter. For example, a lot of people on here loved Ben's nonsense threads, which personally on the whole, weren't for me. So I ignored them, instead of posting how I didn't enjoy them quite as much as others.

Wow, some people clearly take this forum far too seriously..

People chat, some shit, some sense. Put them together, they will surely frustrate eachother.

I would say at the moment this forum consists of around 80% utter Bollocks inclusive of Puns (some funny, some irritating)... Go figure.

At the end of the day, fuck it... Lifes too short to let a fucking website ruin your day!

Thing is Bosey alot of people were on here when the forum was a good craic. Had some cracking threads and funny as fuck things being posted. If i had joined now and moaned then yeah you got a point mate but when it goes from being a decent forum to one where you can more or less guarantee that the only threads you see will be either

Where is best place to buy a telly?
Matchday Thread- which ends up with everyone having a pop at crispy

I can only imagine, im still a noob here. I think a combination of new threads and a "Pun Warning System" is in need?

I used to be part of a forum that had a warning system for offensive comments, was kinda like a volume bar under your avatar and the admin could crank it up a notch every time you were a cunt (Or in this case made a shit pun) until you reached maximum warnings and were condemed to the Cunt (Pun) bin?

Just an idea, like i say, this is all new to me but negativity isnt going to help the situation, just gonna piss people off even more.

This is what I feel almost exactly. I actually avoid all match day threads and any thread with a player name, or is potentially football related, because I know within about a page of posts someone will post something which is either made up or has no upside or positive slant. By avoiding anything that could potentially be full of hatred and negativity has rekindled my love for the club. You could say it's burying my head in the sand, but I've learned it's good for your sanity, rationale and enjoyment of football.

It's like a study I read into polarisation on forums. I think it showed that the groups of differing opinions get ever more extreme and unyielding as something takes off in any particular direction. It talked about how forums are a hotbed for it and that the opinions on either side of an argument get ever more extreme, aggressive, vociferous and unyielding. Eventually the opinions become way more extreme than any party would have originally ever felt prior to the meltdown, since they have now each pushed each other further and further to the extremes. It's also more prevalent when people discuss politics.

I think it's fair to say the events of last season and early this season produced fairly suitable conditions. :)

Not to mention the 'It's Paolo, it's Paolo' bollocks as well.

If you're going to have a pop, the phrase is   "Paolo, it's Paolo"  Surely it's not too much to ask that posters on a Swindon football forum can get the manager's name right ?

General comment
I fully admit, I like punning.  If people don't like it don't join in. As for threads being ruined, have a word with yourselves - most of them die a death without punning playing a part.

I post on this board for a bit of light relief, I think I'm reasonably knowledgeable about the football side of it.

Sorry if some of you don't like it, I doubt I'll change much.

I'll use this as an example so its not aimed directly at you, but people react differently when things don't go to plan. Some people react negatively immediately, then mellow after a day or two - or not. Others try take take the positives straight away.

OK I can see repetitively repeating negative points (or punfests) could get tiresome.

But fucked if I'm not going to post a view on something in the heat of the moment just because its not positive. If that's how I feel at the time, then that's how I feel. I make no apologies for that. If that's interpreted as moaning for moanings sake so be it.

And that's how it should be Batch. Reasoned views, either positive or negative, are good and add to the discussion. It's when people write something that seems to have a loose grasp on the facts (obviously in my rose tinted opinion!) and provides no logical reasoning beyond "it/them being shit" that it grates.

It's like the bloke I used to sit near. He used to go on and on and on about how shit we were, he could even do it when we were winning. I can recall him being pleased, smug perhaps - in an "I told you so" manner, on several occasions, when the opposition had scored, because "we deserve nothing from this".

I wonder if some fans are just jaded by the whole fan thing - a bit like I am with England? I laugh when England concede and would even be amused by knowing they've lost. But if some of our fans feel that badly about it, why watch it and comment on it? I don't watch England and have little to no intention of commenting on it anymore.

Puns, I used to hate them, I now read them chuckling at the thought of some readers breaking their keyboards in a fit of rage.

I don't really post or read much these days. I've got bored of it over time. I'll pop into some match day threads and maybe a few others but that's about it.

The general discussion threads used to be quality. It seems a lot of people have given up on them now. Ben going didn't help the cause. Used to love reading some of his random crap and also the late night threads etc. But there isn't enough of that anymore.

Agree about the moaning as well. We seem to have got a load of serious posters join in the past year or so and since last season it's been forever doom and gloom with some people.

Finally I think i've finally began to grow up a little bit. I don't like to admit it but when you get a bit older there is certain stuff you just don't find as funny as you did a few years ago.

I just wish the more pessimistic posters would stick around... I haven't read a Bart post in ages (which never helps his TEF cause because he rarely posts when the going is good) and whether he's right or not it's always fun to react. We all dig NorwayRed but he's quieter when we're doing well too.

Most of us go on TEF because we are addicted to it like people who play games on Facebook. TEF has lost a lot of its quirk but it's still good.

A lot of the leavers sound like recovering addicts. I used to post but its a mugs game. One little post and suddenly I was doing a thousand a day. I'm out of it now but you've got to take it one day at a time. Is there a TEF anonomous that you can join?

For myself I hardly ever post so I've got it under control. I'm just having a bad day today...

You missed out the part about deleting and creating a new account, but yes fair point...

I think we need to cull the threads that have been running for 217 pages...  If I miss the first five I can't be fucked to catch up and am terrified to cover old ground for fear of being chastised by the more militant members.

That said, I think we have too many boards.  We need about four, maximum.  Having so many boards and seeing some haven't been posted in for over a week makes the tumbleweed all the more prominent.

And I'm afraid my stories are long gone....

...Well I did get caught pissing behind a bush by a copper the other week.  After apologising I got slapped with an £80 fine.  Cue protests about stealth taxes and theft from the common man to feed the interests of the rich...  Forty minutes later and I was talking myself out of an arrest!

Have to say that my use of the forum has reduced significantly for two reasons.

The first is that my Mrs discovered that the the forum contained a lot of use of the word 'cunt' and as a result now calls me a cunt every time she finds me on it or asks what do the cunts think which makes me feel a little bit of a cunt. I told her that the mods had changed the word cunt to 'babe' but for some reason she still calls me a cunt.

The second reason is because of two things.  When we win it's all a bit boring and when we lose I can't be arsed to read the posts from people who only appear on the end of a loss.

To me the forum was at its best when we were discussing the in's and out's of mismanagement by diamond mike and co and since we have hit calmer waters we can only debate what's happening on the pitch and theirs only so much of that you can discuss without it becoming tedious - which is why I guess they turn into a pun fest!

We need an injection of fun and something like Matchday mingers/stunners will help but in reality what we need to do is get the board out and bring back diamond mike...

I'd imagine the average man would be bankrupt if he got slapped £80 every time he p'd behind a bush

The biggest problem was and always will be when everyone got all chummy and the debate and banter just dropped away.

Take this thread - one criticism of Nev and everyone's patting him on the back defending what a good poster he is.

No he's not, he's a silly old cunt who posts a load of nonsense. Just like every other cunt on here. Myself included. Time for everyone to stop taking the fucking interweb so seriously.

This thread is quite amusing.  People stop taking it so seriously.  I think a lot are forgetting the 80% bollocks bit!

If somebody has a go at me I tend to stay away for a bit or watch from a far, just so that I don't say something I will regret later, but apart from that I regularly read and then join in if I have something to contribute.  What's the problem?  I am not an obsessive poster, but use the site to fill some time and keep me informed/amused.

Deltacline had a go recently, we disagreed, called each other cunts, left each other alone for a while moved on, and talked about something else, why do people take things so personally on a site which is 80% bollocks.

Come on people, man up!

For me the forum has gone as far as it can in its current state. It just goes round in circles with the same old shite regurgitated over and over. The site needs new blood and established posters(myself included)need to post less. Dmr was right as the pally pally shite started the rot.  Bandwagon jumpers who follow their mates do my fucking nut, and there are a few on here for sure. Leaping all over previous put downs as they are too weak to act themsleves and for themselves. We all know the sort. The uncool kid on the sidelines trying to be one of the gang but failing miserably.

Also, new posters are up against it as they get lept all over. I've read stuff that newbies have said,to then be abused by established posters and called bullshit fuck off etc. They disapear after abuse even though their posts have often been factual.
If the forum is to move on and get better things need to change. Without doubt it's at an all time low and very quiet.

The forum ebbs & flows.  After all the politics died down at the end of 2007, it started to get very cliquey and the number of regulars fell.  And then a couple of years ago it started to really pick up again.  For some reason which I can't quite work out, it's taken a few steps back again since the start of this season.  I'm sure it will come back again.  On the plus side, there are a good few new posters on here that weren't here 12 months ago.

A slight shudder at even the suggestion of 'amalgamating' with thisis.

There's cliques on every forum. Once you know the views of one you can guess the views of the others. There does appear to be a shedload of arse licking around certain individuals.
As for the "newbies", its a bit of Darwinism - those who don't give much of a fuck survive whilst others don't.
The temptation with all forums is to take it too seriously. For me, its all about a bit of stress relief. Hard day at work - bore someone shitless with my ramblings - job done.
This forum is much better with the likes of arriba, sonicyouth, Mex, JJ Edmunds and DRS than without them. I'd like to see paulD, lumps, Bangkock etc return.
You don't have to agree with someone to resepct their views.
There are still enough "independents" on this forum to make it worthwhile

I know DV in real life, far from it making me 'cliquey' with him it merely reinforces my view that he's a miserable cunt with the personality of a dead and rotting haddock.

I miss all the real meltdowns and psycho posters (Remember Toni?) it's all a little tame now. Even DMR has become a boring cunt, who never really annoys me anymore. Never thought I'd say it, but I miss Lumps and Talk Talk.

I still sign on here a few times a day, but don't post anywhere near as much as I used to, either the quality has dipped or I'm just more chilled out now and don't feel the need to counter posts which I disagree with as much as I used to. It's still the only Swindon forum worth looking at though.

I think Twitter is one of the reasons the TEF has become quieter. I always used to rely on the TEF for matchday information - teams, goals, reaction - and transfer news/rumours but Twitter is a hell of a lot more convenient.

I'll jump in with the missing lumps camp. He was the best. Also Talk talk, but less so.

I don't post much because you're all fascist scum for some reason my life improves when I don't spend however many hours a day posting on here. I now have a lovely girlfriend and job prospects are looking good. It's funny how that works isn't it.

I do check not-logged-in quite often. And I don't think I only post when we've lost as someone has said, unless I've done it drunk and forgotten, maybe something tongue in cheek. I'm quite happy to take the piss out of my own melodramatic forum actions, so can't imagine I'd have done anything else. I'm too fucking lazy to check though.

I did listen to most of the Huddersfield game, first time I've done anything more than check the result for ages. We sounded good. Go Swindon, etc.. Not going to pretend that I'll ever be happy about Di Canio, but that's how it goes. I'd prefer he'd fuck off sooner with us winning rather than sooner with us losing.

I wrote you all a short poem...

Shall I go
on the tef?
not for my woe,
it leaves bereft
me of amusement,
can't leave my renouncement,
should I make an announcement?
Probably no,
but fuck it I will anyway.

How about you fuck off anyway. After years of abject misery, Swindon Town are on the up, yet you think you have the right to disappear and then return to address posters as ''fascist scum''. Get a life Ben. Maybe go and shag your loveley new girlfriend. But please don't think you can come back on here with the same level of respect and credibility that you may have enjoyed in the past. You killed that. ''Nebuliser''.....maybe. 'Malfunction''......almost certainly. We have entered a new era. Please acknowledge and respect that.
