Title: The holiday thread
Post by: sonicyouth on Tuesday, May 10, 2011, 21:53:17
So what is everyone doing this summer?

My girlfriend is going on 'holiday' without me as I will be stuck on night shifts at work. We're planning a long weekend near Tenby in Pembrokeshire - anyone been?

I once had a teacher who was from Tenby. She was blonde with massive norks. I hope that helps.

Been to Pembrokeshire a couple of times.  Very nice.  A place called Dinas head and anoher called Newport (not that one).  Like Cornwall without the huge amount of tourists.

Looking at booking a week somewhere abroad with a few mates. Not paying 18-30 prices as its so expensive, but looking to go somewhere lively.
Struggling to find cheap places to go tho.

I went to Tenby about 10 years ago... pleasant enough from what I can remember. We took a dodgy-looking boat to Caldey Island, I'm not really sure what the attraction was looking back now, as it appears to be famous for its abbey and monks, and we're not religious in the slightest.

This year I'm going to Mongolia. In a Nissan Micra.

We have a week in Dawlish Warren at the end of May and a week in Pembrokeshire (up near Fishguard) in July.

Tenby has some of the best beaches around. There is a pretty decent theme park called Oakwood up near Haverford West. There used to be a really cheesy nightclub un Saundersfoot. LOts of decent pubs and Double Dragon.

Paignton Zoo is ace. Brixham has a really nice fudge shop called Bon Bons - the pubs are mostly cack though. There is a brewery in Paignton called Bay, I think. There is a bistro in Brixham called the Breakwater who does great seafood - the fishermen off the beach and breakwater sell him what they catch and he cooks it pretty much straight away.

Oakwood, christ that's brought back some good memories. Making my dad go on that wooden track rollercoaster and he was terrified. The bobsleigh and go carts were brilliant as a kid but I bet not so good now (if they're still there).

Off to Rhodes early June for the month, in September going to San Fran and then travelling down to Texas via the normal stop offs (first time for me). Went to New York and Washington earlier this year, thought I would hate it and loved it.

All my travel this year is pretty much with work (New York, Denver, Oslo & Barca so far)! Holiday wise went to Estonia & Finland on a short break and going to Italy (near Brindisi) tomorrow for a few days.

What with buying a house I think the only other mini break will be camping in July!

Paignton zoo is ace, went there last year.
We stayed in an apartment in Paignton, and literally a 10 second walk from our front door was a pub that did great food, The Embassy Tavern.
I'd happily be going back to Paignton later this year if I had any holiday left to take.

Pembrokeshire is ace for walking, Tenby is a tidy little resort, but not much happens. I'm guessing that's how you like it.

My fave memory of Tenby was taking the expectant missus...into an intimate restaurant, ordering what seemed decent grub, when the chef ran out in a Fawlty Towers type incident.  The owner was terribly apologetic, and cooked us pork chops, as that was all he could manage :)

Which reminds me the chef in Les Chats has done a runner with one of the waitresses....why isn't fB stepping into the breech.

Had a great week on a farm in Devon over Easter, off to Spain in August for 2 weeks. Having a bit of decent weather always makes me look forward to a holiday more than it pissing down with rain. August seems miles away though.

Oakwood was mentioned earlier - I remember going down a slide there on a plastic sledge type thing. It was a very steep drop that flattened out at the end as you skimmed over some water to slow you down. At the top the attendant said something to me which I didnt quite hear. I later found out that she said "make sure you lean forward as you get to the bottom". Unfortunately I leaned backwards, and managed to do a full 180 backward flip and land fully clothed in the water. As well as being a tad embarrassed, I was more pissed off that there was no bastard filming it for You've Been Framed !

Kavos, on a uni reunion kind of thing, clinging on to my youth! Been there once before as an 18 year old and it was a shit hole but great fun, expecting it to be very similar this year but not sure I'm similar enough to my 18 yo self to enjoy it. Should be interesting either way.

my first lads holiday was to Kavos... i've had the bad judgement to tick off Malia, Faliraki, and Ayia Napa in my youth and would have to say kavos was the shittiest of all those shitholes. still a good laugh though. Napa was the best, and not so grimey (and the exchange rate with the Cypriot pound made it a bargain)

Had a brilliant time walking near Tenby a couple of years ago, stopped at a park at Manorbier just outside Tenby that turned out to be owned and run by the Edwards fair family from Swindon. When you go a must is a visit to Bosherton Lilyponds on the NT Stackpole estate, a long fantastic walk through trees and lakes which eventually opens up to a fantastic golden beach which seems as though no one has discovered it yet.

Flying out to Germany on Monday for three days courtesy of a supplier. They have their own "party house" which from what I've heard is supposed to be great fun.

If I survive that, hopefully a few days in Rome in June, two days at the Open in July followed by a week visiting the inlaws in Bordeaux in August. I shall fill in the gaps by playing golf, watching the cricket and pretending to do some work.

New Faliraki up the hill is the place to stay these days, the best hotels on the island and away from the young Brits in the run-down booze area. The place for youngsters on Rhodes is now Bar Street in Rodos Town and has been for the last four or five years. I agree Kavos is a total shithole, but Malia isn't that bad. Never been to Ayia Napa.

Last home game I went to was last game of 2008/09 season. They won 4-0 but still got relegated to the 2. Bundesliga. 2 years on and history could well be repeating itself - this time to an even shitter league.

Karlsruhe have rattled through 4 managers and about 50 players this season. Nothing's really worked.

I tell a lie about being relegated - the numbers are in KSC's favour:

14  SC Paderborn 07 33 9 9 15 29:45 -16 36
15  Karlsruher SC 33 7 9 17 43:70 -27 30
----------------------------------------------
16  VfL Osnabrück 33 7 7 19 39:62 -23 28
----------------------------------------------
17  Rot-Weiß Oberhausen 33 7 7 19 29:62 -33 28
18  Arminia Bielefeld** 33 4 7 22 27:64 -37 16
