8.9 on the richter scale!!!

I feel a bit bad, when my dad told me a part of me assumed it was just a japanese gameshow. Well bad though

Pretty horrible seeing cars on the road trying but failing to escape the Tsunami.

The recent NZ earthquake was 6.3 on the Richter scale, making this one @8.9 400 times more powerful - assuming my maths are right (10^2.6).

Seems that one of their nuclear reactors is in a spot of bother!

One confirmed. There's three others that could be. How bad does a day get when the earthquake you started out with actually doesn't seem so bad next to the tsunami that hits you as a consequence and you then have to start worrying about your reactors going all Three Mile Island on you? The footage the BBC have been showing is horribly compelling.

Taking away the human and material costs, that whirlpool is amazing.

To be honest, I am not sure the penguins crashing that plane was 100% accurate...

Reports of 200-300 bodies being washed up in one small area alone. This looks like it's going to get into the thousands dead. Poor bastards.

Righty

Mayhem and tragedy aside, how fucking thick are the daily mail. Or, perhaps more pertinently, how fucking thick must their readers be:

Quote
The conspiracy theorists claim that on March 19, the moon will be closer to Earth than at any time since 1992 - just 221,567 miles away - and that its gravitational pull will bring chaos to Earth.

Conspiracy theorists???

How the fuck can the moon possibly conspire? Who the fuck did the moon conspire with? Did the conspire with the Earth behind everybody's back to keep it all a secret.

It's not a conspiracy theory. It's just a theory. Dumb fucks.

Quote
The moon's orbit around Earth is not a circle, but an eclipse.

An eclipse?

Or would that be an ellipse?

I could go on.

Beeb reporting a magnitude 6.6 aftershock..... oh and they're about to release radioactive vapour to ease pressure on one of the reactors.

First quake got upgraded to a 9.0.

That's 6,000 times more powerful than the quake in NZ.

Title: Re: End of days
Post by: thedarkprince on Friday, March 11, 2011, 20:12:16
From @BBCWORLD:

#Japan #earthquake ruptured a patch of the earth's crust that is 240km long and 80km wide, US Geological Survey says, from AP.

Explains the ferociousness of the tsunami. In some ways it's very fortunate that it occurred of the north east and not the south west... Could've had even worse and devastating effects.

@Reuters

FLASH: Japan's trade ministry says the pressure inside the Fukushima nuclear reactor may have risen to 2.1 times the designed capacity

 :(

Still no footage on TV of Godzilla. I'm assuming he's the one responsible, but I'd like to see some tangible evidence.

No I reckon it was Nessie, she wanted a new pool to play in. But she would be on top of the food chain, as haggis got a tad boring. :beers:

Uh oh, that Nuclear Plant is beginning to sound really serious. Fuuuuuck.

We have to hope the explosion was an ancillary building and not the main reactor, but following the story on the Beeb its not looking good :(

Sky News have practically got the man sized Kleenex out to mop up their jiz. Sensationalism :(

Title: Re: End of days
Post by: Freddies Ferret on Saturday, March 12, 2011, 09:07:21
Just seen the pictures, I'm guessing if it was a reactor the explosion would have been much bigger?

Title: Re: End of days
Post by: Batch on Saturday, March 12, 2011, 09:11:18
The reactor itself was shut down wasn't it? Not sure if that would lessen the explosion.

But the media is in a confused state, so I take what they say with a pinch of salt for a few hours. Fingers crossed.

The radiation could get blown right over to the West Coast of the Youess Offay.

How ironic.

Fuck!

Huge earthqaukes, war in the middle east, peak oil, and now nuclear meltdowns. The end of our way of life is coming. Time to stock up on food, water and shot gun ammo.

oh and I;'ve read loads of peak oil books, surival end of the world stuff and they all assume you have access to a gun (ie amercain) so I had to apply/buy a shot gun and I was surprised how easy it was.

New footage - linked below for those who haven't seen it.  I've never seen anything like that in my life - watch out for the swell about 20 seconds in.

 The people taking that footage must have been cacking themselves.

Saw some of the aftermath 1km inland earlier. The amount of debris washed along what was (I think) a river was incredible. They also said one town of 17,000 had only accounted for 7000 of them.
