Title: PRAGUE - KRAKOW - CORK - You decide Post by: THE FLASH on Friday, December 10, 2010, 10:14:43 Going to book one of these these for a weekend in March.
Never been....any advice??? Title: Re: PRAGUE - KRAKOW - CORK - You decide Post by: Nick Bamosomi on Friday, December 10, 2010, 10:18:18 Only been to one of those three - Krakow - can thoroughly recommend that, though it will be cold - we went in Feb and it never got above -10 -very atmospheric at Auschwitz though. And they have no trouble coping with the snow so if it's still there you won't have any cancellations etc :)

Title: Re: PRAGUE - KRAKOW - CORK - You decide Post by: Nick Bamosomi on Friday, December 10, 2010, 10:23:51 About 40 miles I think - can get tours from Krakow by bus (which is what we did) or go by train - takes about 5 or 6 hours for round trip and visit.
Also worth a visit are these - http://www.krakow-info.com/wielicz.htm, but we didn't have time for that. Would like to go back though. If you do go, book a hotel near the cathedral/main square and not on the outskirts - you can walk to most places then. Title: Re: PRAGUE - KRAKOW - CORK - You decide Post by: luckyluke699 on Friday, December 10, 2010, 10:24:46 How far away is Auschwitz? just over 1 hour by bus, best thing you can do is go buy tickets in advance for a tour to Krakow. They're pretty cheap. Also make sure you go see the salt mines (same style trip), you'll have never been in a smaller lift with other people in your life! I remember it costing us about £16 total at the time (2006) but it works out much more expensive now at nearer £22. As mentioned above though, it's pretty good and last quite a while. Krakow is definitely recommended, the weather in the summer is lovely! Title: Re: PRAGUE - KRAKOW - CORK - You decide Post by: Bob's Orange on Friday, December 10, 2010, 10:40:42 Been to both Prague and Krakow. Went to Prague in summer and Krakow in winter and enjoyed both.
I would probably recommend Krakow, as others have said Aushwitz is a must see and the city centre is lovely. Not sure if this has changed in recent years but I went to Gdansk a couple of years ago and it was cheap as chips, can't remember how cheap Krakow was but as its more of a touristy hot spot (and you get the token chavvy British stag parties often visiting which has hiked up prices) in Poland it might not be as dirt cheap. Title: Re: PRAGUE - KRAKOW - CORK - You decide Post by: THE FLASH on Friday, December 10, 2010, 10:42:11 Strangely i have always wanted to go to the camp......history and all that. I think perhaps Mrs Flash might not want to go....

You can get all the crazy local Polish drinks in there such as microwaved lager, with a strawberry/ginger syrup shot in, topped off with raisins and chocolate flakes! Also they do tonnes of awesome vodkas... Title: Re: PRAGUE - KRAKOW - CORK - You decide Post by: THE FLASH on Friday, December 10, 2010, 12:52:43 Krakow is ahead at the moment with cheaper hotels too!
Title: Re: PRAGUE - KRAKOW - CORK - You decide Post by: Anteater on Friday, December 10, 2010, 14:00:49 Loads to see and do in both Prague and Krakow, not so much in Cork still a nice place just the same but more for the beer/whisky orientated visit. Krakow still the cheapest option as Prague has turned into a bit of a rip off city particularly centrally. with taking the other half in mind I would put it in Krakow Prague Cork order of preference. If you're in Krakow for a few days worth a day trip to Zakopane (Tatry mountains couple of hours drive) very scenic.

Title: Re: PRAGUE - KRAKOW - CORK - You decide Post by: Hitchinred on Saturday, December 11, 2010, 08:00:51 I think Krakow and Prague are both great and never been to Cork. Krakow shades it mainly on price where even a beer sat outside on the main square was around £2. Went there in October for a 50th birthday and everybody was blown away by how cheap it was. Can recommend Antique Apartments for something different than a hotel and trips to Auschwitz and the salt mines are a must, although experience tells me not to go to the salt mines with a hangover as you're underground for a couple of hours, walking 2km. Flights were about £75 return from Stansted booked well in advance.
Title: Re: PRAGUE - KRAKOW - CORK - You decide Post by: Ardiles on Saturday, December 11, 2010, 09:01:04 I've been to Prague and Cork, but not Krakow (which I hear is amazing). Cork is OK but, for me, not in the same league as Prague...which had much more to see/do. Infact, I'd happily go back to Prague right away. Stunning city. As it happens, there is also a concentration camp/holocaust museum nearby as well. We hired a car and drove to Terezin, just 40 miles north of Prague. Link below. Don't think I'll ever forget that visit.

Out of interest how much are the flights there? EasyJet Bristol - £100 odd quid return......25th - 27th March. Title: Re: PRAGUE - KRAKOW - CORK - You decide Post by: Samdy Gray on Monday, December 13, 2010, 09:44:14 I can also recommend Prague. A fantastic city full of history. I could've spent days and days walking around Prague Castle.
