Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: Simon Pieman on Saturday, July 17, 2010, 12:44:36 I'm supposed to be going tomorrow. Can you take beer in?
Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: Crispy on Saturday, July 17, 2010, 13:09:06 Used to go to this every year when i was younger, and watch it in my uncles garden who lives in Fairford. It was a good 10 years ago and i cant even remember it, is it any good?

Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: Iffy's Onion Bhaji on Saturday, July 17, 2010, 13:32:33 Never really been that interested in it. I guess if you can take beer in it's a good day out though.

A lovely pint. Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: Batch on Saturday, July 17, 2010, 13:45:23 Showcase for the global arms trade....good family day out, as long as you don't think about the consequences. don't think the spitfires or vulcan is selling too well. Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: Benzel on Saturday, July 17, 2010, 14:26:40 The Red Arrows' new Hellfires look pretty mean too.
Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: reeves4england on Saturday, July 17, 2010, 14:35:09 I'm working there this year. Saw some of the aircraft flying this morning and it's amazing what those planes/pilots can do. Just try not to think how much it is costing us and what we are using it for.
Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: stfcinbmth on Saturday, July 17, 2010, 14:37:40 We have an airshow in Bournemouth in August. It's great as I can see all the action from the garden.
The Red Arrows are absolutely awesome, but my favourites have to be the Battle of Britain flypast, Spitfire, Lancaster and Hurricane, god the sound of those engines gives me goosebumps and if I'm honest bring a tear to my eye. Incredible Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: Chubbs on Saturday, July 17, 2010, 14:43:57 used to go to my uncles in lechlade for a BBQ every year, everything flew right over his place.
dunno why he's not got one this year Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: Arriba on Saturday, July 17, 2010, 14:45:10 the best plane related thing i saw was an unexpected display by the red arrows at barry island.went there for the day, and it turned out to be the day they were there.they were superb.
Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: Highland Robin on Saturday, July 17, 2010, 15:32:31 Living where I do, we get an air show almost every day.....we have a bombing range just outside the town! But it does mean that 'in recompense' the Red Arrows come up every year for our Annual Gala and try out their latest routines.

That's pretty cool, though, having the Red Arrows turn up for the village fete!Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: Barry Scott on Saturday, July 17, 2010, 16:44:16 I went once when I was about 8 or so and remember it being horribly hot and my Mum refusing to keep buying me drinks. I also remember being very, very bored. Apart from when looking at the planes while grounded rather than watching the displays. Saying that, I do remember being shaken to the bone by the noise from a Vulcan flying about 50 ft from the ground, which was quite cool. :)
Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: Luci on Saturday, July 17, 2010, 17:12:00 We always used to go when I was younger. Shame they have stuck a ridiculous price tag on it mind. Not sure how families are supposed to be able to afford to take their kids out nowadays!
Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: Ginginho on Saturday, July 17, 2010, 17:16:14 Can't remember ever going as a kid, never really interested me and at £37.50 a ticket, fuck that.
Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: 4D on Saturday, July 17, 2010, 17:17:27 I've been about 3 or 4 times but have never paid....complimentary tickets won etc.
Saw the stealth bomber take off; the B1 bomber was very loud  Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: Simon Pieman on Saturday, July 17, 2010, 17:18:11 It's always been expensive though
Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: Batch on Saturday, July 17, 2010, 20:15:43 Very true SI Pie. Used to work on the gate when you could pay cash and drive onto the air field. Saw a few people go white handing over best part of £80 notes for 4. And that was 1992.
Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: Ardiles on Sunday, July 18, 2010, 18:55:52 We have the Farnborough Air Show starting here tomorrow. This year we have all the regulars (incl Red Arrows, MIGs) as well as the new Boeing Dreamliner and the A400M (possible C130/Hercules replacement). All of which will be performing three point turns over my back garden next weekend. Huge BBQ planned. Can't wait.
Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: Batch on Sunday, July 18, 2010, 19:08:51 A400M was at Fairford too. £100 Million per plane!
Would like to see the Dreamliner , but it probably looks boring. Saw the A380 at Farnborough the Fairford washout year and that was awesome and and massive, and they chucked it around a fair bit for such a big plane! Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: leefer on Sunday, July 18, 2010, 19:13:52 Billions of money wasted in my view........what do these planes actually do to warrant us spending vast amounts on them..........if some dodgy dictator in a far of land wants to nuke us what are they going to do to stop them..............zilch.
Thats not to say they dont look good. Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: pumbaa on Sunday, July 18, 2010, 19:25:52 We have the Farnborough Air Show starting here tomorrow. J will be in service a while yet..... Had to turn down my complimentary invite to Farnborough, too busy at work. Booooooooooo......... Is that what I went to Australia on? Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: reeves4england on Monday, July 19, 2010, 12:56:59 Is that what I went to Australia on? How clever of you!! And it was Singapore airlines too! It's a beast of a plane but to be honest you don't feel any different when your on it anyway your not allowed upstairs cause that's the private suites
Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: Sussex on Monday, July 19, 2010, 13:07:34 You mean you sat downstairs with the riff raff? Minger.
Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: Jamiesfuturewife on Monday, July 19, 2010, 13:14:42 Yep! BUT I quite enjoyed it as quite alot of the time people ask me if anyone in my family is oriental (probably cause when I smile it makes my eyes go really small!) and the air steward kept speaking to me on Singapore language!
I felt like a real life ting tong! ( my nickname at work!) Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: nevillew on Monday, July 19, 2010, 13:22:06 That's pretty cool, though, having the Red Arrows turn up for the village fete! Some wierd planes going over Swindon today as they all leave for home. Even though the radar can't spot 'em, I saw a Stealth over Rodbourne this morning. Apparently today is the most dangerous day around these 'ere parts as the pilots would have had a few last night at the end of show party. I'd be surprised if you saw the stealth bomber...it wasnt at fairford. May have been the Raptor, but they're pretty different to look at. Had to laugh at all the places charging a tenner to get in to watch it in a field a mile away. You can park in the car parks on the airfield, get out and watch from the perimeter for free. They charge to get in to get up close to the planes, see the stands etc. Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: reeves4england on Monday, July 19, 2010, 18:31:51 Yep! Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: Batch on Monday, July 19, 2010, 18:35:17 I'd be surprised if you saw the stealth bomber...it wasnt at fairford. Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: nevillew on Monday, July 19, 2010, 20:11:22 I think the word you're looking for is Singaporean ;) Which doesn't exist of course, but I'm sure you were being ironic. Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: reeves4england on Monday, July 19, 2010, 20:15:22 Which doesn't exist of course, but I'm sure you were being ironic. Quite. As the first language of Singapore is, of course, Singlish.Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: 4D on Monday, July 19, 2010, 20:50:16 I felt like a real life ting tong! ( my nickname at work!) Title: Re: Air Tattoo, Fairford Post by: Batch on Tuesday, July 20, 2010, 09:09:12 Growing up near Kemble when the Arrows were based there meant regular displays in the summer which you could see from the garden when they were practising. Anyone remember the Red Barrows? Yes, I beleive they made an appearane on "That's Life" didn't they. My dad was in the RAF stationed at Little Rissington and the Kemble with the sparrows. I think he was the aircraft equivelant of a painter and decorator. I have vague memories of the famailies open day and sitting in a Gnat (used by the Sparrows before the Hawk). Mum says all the wives had to leg it into the garden to take down the washing on practice days involving the smoke. |
