Title: Swindon Town V Tranmere Rovers official matchday thread
Post by: mexico red on Monday, April 5, 2010, 07:49:02
would be churlish not to start this, will be touch and go if i make kick off, totally dependant on traffic as i cant leave til midday.

Really hope the people of swindon are starting to notice and we get a 10,000 + crowd today.

I'm almost as interested in the attendance figure as what the final score will be. It has to be 10,000+ on an Easter Monday when we've just dicked Leeds 3-0 away and gone second doesn't it? Anything less would be abysmal and embarassing and frankly, not what the players and management deserve.

I predict it will be be tough and possibly a bit scrappy with Trannies 'parking the bus'.

I will go for 2-0..a couple of late(ish) goals from Austin and Paynter (yet again!)

Any idea what time the ticket office opens?
There's fuck all on the website about bank holiday opening hours, no one's answering the phone and I want to get a ticket next to us for my nephew....

Same as last year 3-1, i've been hearing the woodwork squeaking, will be over 10k today.

This may have been posted already but I was just doing a bit of 'Stattoeing' and since the 31st October (which was when Billy really started scoring, he only got one before that and Charlie made his first start in the next league game on the 21st November) Austin and Paynter have scored 36 goals in 25 league games. There have only been five games in that time where neither has scored. That's a bit special.

:hmmm: surely we can get 10k today i know a few people going to get tickets this morning i'll say 10,243 & a tough 3-0 win maybe stephen darby to get his first town goal as we're playing tranmere ?...... & the deadly duo getting the other 2 see you all there lets hope its not too nailbiting

It would be easy for our team not to be in the right frame of mind for this today.

They beat Norridge friday, and yes they were lucky. But theyve had an extra day to recover, and their morale will be sky high.

I think we will scrape through this one today. We need to. The competition for the 2nd place is red hot, whoever wins 5 of the next 7 games will be the team to get the automatic spot.

I can't go  Got to work, I very rarely miss home games (this will be about my 4/5th in about 5 years)
Made sure I got next monday off though :)

I think 3-1 Austin (2) , Paynter.

OS says in excess of 8k. Less than 10k would be an insult to the team, so come on Swindon, get out and support your team!

As for the score, Tranmere are crap away from home and have only scored 9 times!!! But then we said the same about Rovers, so..... a very close game and 2-1 to the Town.

We need to be careful in this game, Tranmere will be no easy game, with them comming off the back of a 3-1 win agains the league leaders. Our confidence will be high after destroying Lids, so im going for a 2-0 win. Austin with both

All I will say is that virtually everyone has Easter bank holliday monday off work.

There is no park football.

Surely the fans can generate some momentum now?

And dont forget that a 10,000 crowd is almost a home sell out (unless they have the option of opening up the bank if the rest is full).

Sorry Reg. My fault. I just posted in that thread! I don't really think it matters too much what we're thinking about though. It's all about the players and management and they're all going to be focused on today I'm sure.

A win is important to consolidate second place.

We should be full of confidence after saturday but so will Trannies after beating Norwich.

I reckon there will be just under 10,000.

Bit of a wind today...I've seen many a game at the CG at this time of year where the wind blows over the top of the TE and makes for a scrappy affair...we've proved we can win scrappy away, but will the mongs manage to keep off the player's backs, if it starts to go a bit wrong?

Answer...no, it was about this time last season that Macklin was abused ,a 17 year old kid playing his maybe second or third game...cunts.

Any win today would be massive....

I think we will do well today. Solid at the back, Midfield controlling the game and the 2 front boys running riot and generally having a laugh.

3-0 to the Swindon, Austin, Paynter and Ward.

Attendance 8750 as Tranmere will only bring a handful of fans with them.

I wish I had more faith in the people of Swindon, but I don't think we'll break 10k, which is a fucking travesty after what the lads have achieved this season. GUTTED that I'm at work. I'm a wreck listening to the radio. Gonna be tough today I think, but we should win. Hope the atmosphere is good, calling all of you that went to Leeds: bring that atmosphere today. Show the rest of them how it's done.

if we make the play offs then i hope they sort something out with regard to buying tickets.

Yeovil vs Leeds  12.30 kick off

Colchester vs Millwall 13.00 kick off

Let's see how we react as a team and fans to the results from both of these games.

Come on Town! Big,big effort this afternoon.

The ball is well and truly in our court from now on in....win every game and we will go up automatically (only Naarwich can say that too), take each game at a time and lets win them all as they are all winable.

Right mindset and we will go up.

2 teams feeling confident after Friday/Saturday's results, but more so in our case as I reckon Tranny players know deep down that they had a big helping hand vs Naaaarch.

As Reg said with the conditions, and taking into account Tranny's position, I can see it being fairly untidy with us being in control and bringing home the bacon.

Spot on JJ - fuck Leeds, fuck Millwall, it's in our hands to win automatic promotion now. 100% behind the lads today and anyone starts whining or getting players backs, spark em out before the first moan is out their mouths

'That' Broomes goal was against Birmingham, not Huddersfield.

Indeed it was back in 97 a 3-1 win, fantastic goal, one of the best I have ever seen, as good as Strouds against Everton.

Radio Five Live, commenting on the Charlton score said it was a vital goal with both Millwall & Leeds winning away today!  No mention of any other clubs in the promotion frame who might be in with a shout!  Still, like many of the fans glad we're still not registering. I'd settle for being the 'invisible' runners up in League One & gaining automatic promotion with other much bigger clubs having to settle for the play-offs.

I couldn't agree more!  How can they have a website entitled 'We are Champions, Champions of Europe'.  Even the great Leeds United team that Revie put together never won the European Cup but they are sooo up themselves it's not true.

They are in League One because that is what the results of the eleven players on the pitch deserve.  You don't get bonus points for having big crowds or modern stadia.

How many do you reckon we'll have at Colchester?

Would like to think we'll take over 1000 but I expect around 6/700 to make the trip. Any idea how many tickets we have for it?

I doubt we will have an easier game all season.

Angry Shouty Man was back today, only the second time I've seen him all season - the other time was Hartlepool.

We won and he didnt even shout any abuse, not even for Jon-Paul McGovern who must have killed his mother last season, the way he went on.

Post by: reeves4england on Monday, April 5, 2010, 16:49:04
That is one of the most boring games of football I have witnessed in a long time. Tranmere offered absolutely nothing with 11 men, let alone 10, and it was a total walk in the park for our lads. Had we really gone for it and shown some cutting edge I reckon we could have put a few more past them but the play was just pedestrian at times because that was all it needed to be. Thoroughly unentertaining, but a 3-0 win is always a good result so I'll try and say something positive...

Douglas had total control in the middle. Greer and Cuthbert rarely looked troubled. Lucas must have been desperate for a deck chair he had so little to do. Lovely goal from Austin, with a great ball from JP to set it up. We were just far too good for them and that's all there is to it. Their number 5 was alright but the rest looked hopeless.

Oh, and goodness knows what the penalty (and red card) was for but we'll take it.

Was angry shouty man back?! I didn't even realise he was there, we must be doing well.

Was a dull game. We never got out of second gear, and in all honesty never had to. Not sure what the tranny defender was thinking for the oggy. He just sort of ran into the ball from what i saw.

Only one real bit of skill in the whole match was Austins goal. Great touch, great composure, great finish. He's rather good that ked.

The lino flagged as soon as the corner was taken, I thought it was because the ball was not in the D, then I realised he was indicating a penalty.  Didn't see the incident.

great result today, we were in control all through the game.
they had no chance 10 or 11 players, very average team with no attacking threat.

great goal for austin, darby done well and its only a matter of time before Sheehan and Douglas get a goal!

thought the atmosphere was poor considering 9,500 crowd, TE/DRS wilsons red and white army was poor today   Tranmere fans had a drum which was annoying  :headhurts:
agree with others the bank should be opened. id happily spend a few games there.

seeing the league table come on the tv in the CGH was enjoyable for me  ;D

good times as they say! even treated myself to the blue shirt today! (probably be a tenner next week but oh well!)

looking forward to the Colchester game..........

How many do you reckon we'll have at Colchester?

Would like to think we'll take over 1000 but I expect around 6/700 to make the trip. Any idea how many tickets we have for it?

i got my Colchester ticket after the game and there was quite a big queue with most people getting their Colchester tickets too.

anything less than a 1000 would be very poor imo.

were in a great position now.

angry shouty man, is a man who shouts very angrily.

he had a season ticket around us last season and would shout the most stupid things, always negative as well. He was never happy.

He missed two games and we won both back to back!! then he came back and we were rubbish again.

He seemed to have a deep hatred for all things Jon-Paul McGovern, on occasions McGovern was out injured and still getting stick from this man!!

Aljofree was another one of his favourites, once moaned at for not getting the ball back to centre quickly enough (!!) whilst the Huddersfield players were still very much celebrating in our half anyway!

He didnt come back this season, great - then we saw him for the Hartlepool game and we lost. This is the first time I've seen him since and I was worried!

He also looks a bit like shrek!

Easiest 3 points we will get this year but you still have to put the performance in which is exactly what we did.

Be interesting to see the match stats for today (Dave)

More than happy with a 3-0 win to seal 6 pts from the Easter weekend without getting out of second gear. Savage must be one of the most hilariously bad forwards I've seen in a long time. And having skimmed the last couple of pages, whoever said "Is Nouble the new Hutchinson" (saw it, but can't be bothered to go back and find it) is a tit.

Looking at the run ins for Leeds and Millwall, we need Huddersfield to take points from Millwall, and Charlton from Leeds.

How ironic would it be if a Rovers getting a result at Elland Road on the last day sorted us out....?!

What an odd game today was. We looked comfortable without the front two being their normal imposing self. Then they score an own goal, and the lino gives a penalty and sending off for ??? and the game is over. Nice take by Austin for the third too then it was a training ground match.

I have just about started to believe we will make the playoffs now. To be in the automatic places hunt is unreal. Long may it continue.

If the weathers nice it's a great place to be, can remember being in that end one year think it was against Leicester, anyhow Kevin Poole was in goal for them and think it was 0-0 or 1-1 and the sun was out, fantastic, but my memory ain't so great.

Ideal game after the Leeds high...we've now reached the magic 40 games and the PO's is mor or less certain...for the next 4 after Norwich. Bit surprised that Charlton have managed to regroup.  Udders have a big pressure game tomorrow....lose and they open the way for possibly Soton and Rovers.

2nd could now go to any one of the 4.

Absolutely the perfect game! I'd settle for another 6 of those dull easy victories!

Charlton have hardly had a mention recently, but in truth they are just as dangerous as Milwall, and possibly more so than Leeds in the automatic chase.

Regarless of what we do (which is all that counts) there are some interesting games coming up amongst the top 6

Possibly the worst game of football I've seen this season. The sending off and penalty / 2nd goal totally killed the game off and for some reason seemed to take the atmosphere out of the ground as well - it was like a morgue after that. In the 2nd half we weren't that bothered about scoring any more and were happy playing keep ball while Tranmere looked like they had far better things to do with their time. If we lose out on goal difference at the end of the season it will be due to games like this that we should have won by 5 or more goals but failed to finish the job off properly.

Having said that, it was another perfect professional display and we're back to 2nd so good times. But its just weird, having gone to the Leeds game and been on top of the world ever since, having gone today I now feel a bit meh.

Very disappointing to not get over 10k at the game. Though I'm sure it was partly due to the win at Leeds and ending up 2nd surprising a lot of people and with it being a bank holiday weekend they didn't have much of a chance to get their arse in gear to get to the game. Pity our next game is live on TV as that means another crap attendance.

Pretty certain the ball doesn't have to be in play. I'm sure I saw something similar a year or so ago on TV, the ball had gone our for a goal kick then for some reason the keeper runs up to someone and decks them - red card and penalty.

Though today the ball was in play, I thought the linesman had flagged for the ball going out of play at first until he put the flag across his chest. I swear to god the only person in the entire ground that saw it was the linesman. There wasn't the slightest reaction from any of the players - Austin included. Very strange. Will be interesting to see the highlights.

we did a thoroughly professional job today. Any team who wears a kit like that deserves to lose. Any bunch of fans who have a drum and gather around it like a bunch of gayers deserve to lose. Any team who play us deserve to lose.
We got 3 points, no injuries, a clean sheet, no cards and a goal each for Paynter and Austin and a classic little og to boot.
Not avery exciting match but we all moan when we shade it hanging on - today was over by half time.

The lino flagged as soon as the corner was taken, I thought it was because the ball was not in the D, then I realised he was indicating a penalty.  Didn't see the incident.

Very similar to Barry Corr's sending off a couple of years ago against Swansea for 'raking' but I think that time the ref spotted it.

Good performance today. Tranmere looked like they may have had one too many beers over the weekend after the Norwich result - aside from the first 5 minutes they just didn't want to play.

Bit of a shame we couldn't get more goals for our goal difference but I don't think that would settle a position at this stage. Glad we didn't have to over-exert ourselves and Austin is clearly up to the same fitness levels as the rest of the squad :)

Talk about under the radar. I think we are actually fucking invisible. Great.

Quote
Norwich   2 - 1   Stockport
Grant Holt became the first Norwich player since 1964 to score 30 goals in a season as they beat seemingly-doomed Stockport to close in on promotion...

...But the Canaries sealed their 16th home win of the season when Darel Russell set up Holt, who powered home.

The win keeps Norwich 10 points clear of third-placed Millwall with six games to play. It also ensured that the Canaries have at the very least secured a play-off berth.

Right, if the corner hadn't been taken it couldn't have been a foul.  The ball would not have been in play, a requirement for a foul.  If that had been the case the red card would have been awarded for misconduct with the start of play an indirect free kick where the offense took place.  All that said, who gives a fuck, the Tranmere player tried to hurt Charlie.

The flag was waved as soon as Sheehan took his kick. My first thought was he had looped the ball out of play (which would have been clever considering he's left footed and the corner was taken from the right of goal); the lino then put the flag across his chest, I didn't see what happened in the box though.

Sorry, but that's wrong. If the ball isn't in play, no free kick can be given, at all. Free kicks can only be given during active play, not at dead ball situations. Red card would stand, but the restart would be the same restart as before, in this case a corner.

But, the lino did the crafty thing and waited till the ball was kicked before flagging pretty much assuring the penalty -  and who said referees wern't cheats...

Boring game, and Nouble needs some new boots. Some black ones would be nice, otherwise he's this seasons Macklin.

I think today was a case of saving ourselves for Saturday. It was always going to be a stroll in the park and at half-time DW probably told them to slow down the tempo, to prevent any injuries

Yes, correct, the restart would have been a corner.  I also think the lino was crafty, the Tranmere player would have wanted to have whacked Charlie while the ball was out of play.  Also, who wants to give a red card for an offence in the box then restart with a corner, except Andy fucking Hall.

They didn't catch the incident (or at least they didn't show it) on the highlights. But they did show all the Swindon players walking away after the linesman had flagged as though it was against them - nothing from any of them to suggest something had happened. Very strange.

Piss easy game for the lads today. The stroll in the park attitude on the pitch against shite opposition transferred to the terraces, and the atmos was understanderbly muted.

I dont think anyone was under any illusion that we had a few more gears to shift up to if we ever found ourselves under any kind of pressure today though, and the players seemed happy enough with the applause and respect when the subs were made and after the game.

The real pressure test starts next Saturday at Colchester. Regardless of that result or how we do during the run in though, I believe we have big enough bollocks to cope with a must-win match at Milwall on the last day.

Cant fucking wait to make the trip to the New Den to watch our lads tear them a new arsehole.

Not much to say about this game, & what there is to say has been well & truly covered here, ie we started the game in the ideal manner, good things came our way - o/g, red card, pen, game was over, we just conserved energy & made sure of the win, no oppo to speak of, was just a case of run the clock down to 16:50-odd.

The perfect scenario, today could've been nervy & ultimately frustrating. An entertaining end-to-end ding-dong is nowhere near the top of my list. Points points and more points please.

Shook hands and exchanged pleasantries with the great Don Rogers afterwards - he was buzzing. Also chatted with John Salako for a little while - he was very honest, he was at pains to say how impressed he was with us but he seemed pretty convinced that we would miss out, and described Millwall & Leeds as "stronger". I told him that I was "perfectly happy for you media people to carry on ignoring us". Sky had got him a personal driver, he jumped in the back of a big BMW like Lord Posh-Bollocks.

Based on yesterdays game, purely due to the circumstances of being 2-0 up and on cruise control, you can see where he is coming from. Carry on media (ooooh maaatron).

Almost afraid to mention it, but has anyone looked at our goals against since Franchise?

Easy win for us. Didn't need to get out of 2nd gear or even 1st after the break really. Training exercise which was fantastic after the Leeds game took it out of us no doubt. I think Saturday is the biggest game of the ones we have left now. Win it and we're on the final stretch with 4 games we should be looking to win. If we win our next 5 i think we are as good as up and won't need that last game at The Den. Can't see any of the other 3 teams winning their next 5 games. I guess they're all saying the same thing though.

Can someone help me remember the Floodlight failure game in the 90's and what the score was when it was replayed ?
Is the general feeling that we did in fact break the floodlights?
I seem to remember them always being dodgy in the late 80's early 90's
I was only 13 or 14 so i was naive to know the ins and outs of the sage.
I know Tranmere then hated us for appealing in 90 which sent them back down to div 3 but my memories of Tranmere have always been at prenton park when we were singing their name and applauding each other at the end of the play off game in 93

It was a potential banana skin which was a walk in the park really you have to admit. Austin's goal was the highlight of a pretty dull game. Ian Goodison literally did nothing right the whole game and Bas Savage, if he's a footballer, then I am a courgette.

It was, but that's because we spent the best part of 2 hours watching something akin to a training session. There was no pressure, no tension, and no real excitement once we were in front. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, it just isn't conducive to making fans get behind the players.
