Title: Broken collar bone
Post by: Talk Talk on Monday, March 1, 2010, 20:09:57
Ah the perils of a promising sunny day.

I decided to ride my Honda to work today. Hit a patch of ice on the back road to Cricklade and lost it. Bike is ok, just a few scratches but I took the fall on my right shoulder and busted my collar bone.

Anybody had a broken collar bone before? This is a straight fracture. How long do they take to heal and stuff? I'm supposed to be driving a minibus to Southampton in three week's time. Any chance?

At least the bike is OK

:)

Sounds painful. No idea on recovery time but surely its got to be 4-6 weeks min- Get well soon

How long does it take to recover from a collarbone fracture?
Clavicle fractures should heal completely within 12 weeks, but the pain usually subsides within a few weeks. Often patients are back to full activities before 12 weeks has passed, especially with younger patients.

As a general guide to return to activities, nothing should cause worsening pain. If not wearing a sling causes pain, wear a sling. If driving hurts the fracture site, don't drive. If throwing a ball hurts, don't throw. Once an activity doesn't cause significant pain, a gradual return can be attempted.

Recovery is usually complete, with a full return expected. Patients may notice a persistent bump where the fracture was (often for months or longer), but this should not be bothersome.

That's you stuffed!

My younger bro broke his on the trampoline a few years ago and I think it was pretty much as good as new in a month or 5 weeks... although he was only 12 or 13 at the time so probably would've healed quicker. And he was strapped up the whole time. So I'd say your minibus chances are between nil and fuck all.

Oh, and hahahahahahahaha.

My broken ankle took about six weeks to heal, my broken hand about three weeks.  :)

Am I right in thinking that bones heal quicker when you are younger?

When you say 'heal', were they immobile or could you work up doing stuff with them before then?

Bones heal just fine at the age of 25 :-p

My ankle was in plaster, so I could walk on crutches straight away. My hand was in a splint. Collar bone I imagine is awkward because it's on your main "trunk", is your arm strapped to your body?

Nah, they just gave me a crappy sling which I managed to singe with cigar ash five minutes after leaving A&E. To be honest the arm feels more comfortable left hanging rather than strapped up, apparently they do that to take the weight off your shoulder and stop it drooping as that is what the stupid fragile wanky bone is supposed to do in the first place. I have it on good authority that 4lb of pressure on the shoulder is enough to snap it and that it is the most common fracture.

The RAC man who recovered my bike this afternoon (and pushed it around, manhandled a bike trailer etc) broke his collar bone two months ago doing motorcross  :D

You probably should have quizzed him about recovery then...!

I did, but his situation was different as he had a compound fracture which should take a lot longer to heal. I'm hoping to be fairly mobile after three weeks...

Ah well, off to the Fracture Clinic tomorrow, I guess they will tell me what to expect.

Bearing in mind Southampton is on the 16th,(I make that 2 weeks not 3) I'd agree with Dr DMR's assessment.

I broke mine last September and was off work for 6 weeks followed by a week or so on light duties. Didnt stop me going to footy though. Just had to remember not to jump up and celebrate any goals!!!

As for driving it was about 4 weeks before I started again and even then it was a bit uncomfortable. I was told not to drive for about 5 to 6 weeks but got fed up catching the bus so started to drive anyway!

I've broken one several times. 4-6 weeks like others have said should be fine. Sometimes it seems to recover really quick, but don't take liberties with it because you'll regret it.

Cycling accident. Learnt an important lesson that day, never go out when your brakes are knackered!!!

Well peeps, I had a check up at da hospital this morning and as well as a broken collar bone I also have a busted rib. Which means that there is no way I will be able to drive our minibus to Southampton on Tuesday.

Can anyone volunteer or suggest anybody else who might take pity on us? You/they will need to meet this (or have a D1 on their licence if you/they still have the green version/old git etc):

Quote
Exempted passenger carrying vehicles

Holders of a full category B (car) driving licence may drive any of the vehicles listed below:

    * a passenger carrying vehicle manufactured more than 30 years before the date when it is driven and not used for hire or reward or for the carriage of more than 8 passengers
    * a minibus with up to 16 passenger seats provided the following conditions are met:

i.   the vehicle is used for social purposes by a non-commercial body but not for hire or reward
ii.  the driver is aged 21 iii. the driver has held a car (category B) licence for at least 2 years
iv. the driver is providing the service on a voluntary basis
v.  the minibus maximum weight is not more than 3.5 tonnes or 4.25 tonnes including any specialist equipment for the carriage of disabled passengers
vi. if the driver is aged 70 or over, is able to meet the health standards for driving a D1 vehicle

Several seats left by the way. £15 inc hire and diesel. Leave Swindon about 1pm. Bring your own booze.

For reference for anybody else that suffers this in the future...

Last night at St Mary's the shoulder and the rib hurt like fuck. However, today there is almost no pain at all, I can even move my arm around a fair amount with no twinges. Great away wins obviously have beneficial side effects ;D  Either that or the booze sparked me out so much that I slept properly for a whole night - the first one since I did it.

So two weeks and a day on it is much better. Can't drive or ride yet though, wouldn't want to risk screwing the healing bone bit up.
