Title: 1974. Post by: leefer on Tuesday, February 2, 2010, 20:32:31 Piece in the Adver tonight...Town v Bolton and there first Sunday match...8,500 saw it.
Town Keeper Jimmy Allen was missing for religious regions. Nothing changes really...2 up through Ray Clarke and Terry Hubbard,Bolton hit back to grab a point.. The thing that made me chuckle was that because of sunday trading rules at the time the club had to leave one turnstyle open for free entry....of course this was kept hush, hush and only 29 fans went through it for free! It was a terrible season and i think one match was played on a tuesday afternoon in front of only 3000 fans...with Les Allen (clives dad?)in charge the Town were relegated at the season end...after briefly being top after 3 matches. Title: Re: 1974. Post by: BANGKOK RED on Tuesday, February 2, 2010, 20:42:13 I was born in 74.

It was a terrible season and i think one match was played on a tuesday afternoon in front of only 3000 fans...with Les Allen (clives dad?)in charge the Town were relegated at the season end...after briefly being top after 3 matches. A truly terrible season was 73-74, at the time I thought we couldn't have worse but we have. v Looton in Feb 74 we played at home and lost in front of 2600...the previous week 3284 turned up to see us get dicked 4-1 by Notts County....perhaps the worst humiliation being the scum had a higher average attendance, one of only 2 examples when in the same div. Those crowds were so low because games had to be afternoon KO's mid week as floodlights were banned in an effort to conserve electricity, during the 3 day week. I thought it was proper ace, because you could invite a bird round stack up with booze and drugs, and when the power went, use candle light, which tends to get them going a bit. Throw in the fact there was bugger all else to do, and it was a guaranteed shag :) Title: Re: 1974. Post by: alanmayes on Wednesday, February 3, 2010, 17:56:26 v Looton in Feb 74 we played at home and lost in front of 2600...the previous week 3284 turned up to see us get dicked 4-1 by Notts County....perhaps the worst humiliation being the scum had a higher average attendance, one of only 2 examples when in the same div. I was there for the Loo town game, the Townend was full of school kids who had bunked off and i was happily one of them! :D We had in goal a keeper called Alan Spratley, who was without doubt the worst keeper to ever pull on a Town jersey. Title: Re: 1974. Post by: leefer on Wednesday, February 3, 2010, 19:57:42 On loan from QPR.
Title: Re: 1974. Post by: Reg Smeeton on Wednesday, February 3, 2010, 20:10:43 On loan from QPR. Think he was all ours...loan players were quite rare back then. We had Jimmy Gabriel that season on loan, I saw him make his debut at Pompey, and he looked and played like a dead man walking....the like of which I hadn't seen since the days of Ken (Rigor Mortis) Keyworth. Title: Re: 1974. Post by: leefer on Wednesday, February 3, 2010, 20:22:24 Think it was an emergency loan deal Reg because Allan wouldnt play?...i may be wrong.

I stand corrected Reg. Title: Re: 1974. Post by: leefer on Wednesday, February 3, 2010, 20:35:43 While on the old stuff ive a cracking prog from 1963...the hundred year celebration of the FA .
England v Rest of the World at Wembley. The reason ime mentioning is that ive heard of all the England Players(and rest of world) except one...his name was/is Maurice Norman from Spurs...the rest ide heard of Banks Armfield Wilson Milne Norman? Moore Paine Greaves B,Smith Eastham Charlton...subs,Waiters,Kay(match fixer with Bronco Layne)Flowers, and Shellito. Included in the ROW were greats like Eusebio,Di Stefano,Law and Yashin in goal...and according to the advert on the back cover they all drank Bovril! |
