Theres a bridge. Not sure when it closes.

Theres a cycle track type thing too, but that gets a bit dodgy at night

As Dave says, the bridge at the station is your best bet. Pretty certain its always open during office hours in the week but outside of that its a bit of a lottery. Fuck knows why they can't sort it out to keep it open all day and night.

The footpath / cycle track would be the next best option but I wouldn't use it late at night. If you want to risk it, turn right out of the station and its a few minute walk on the right where the car park is.

Im from the ferndale area and i would not use that cycle path at night unless you are in numbers of at least five or more, and then i would still be on you're guard.

Im not sure why you have to use that side by the leisure centre unless you're planning on going back after the game etc or before for some reason, the bridge is mainly for the workers in the day so will be more than likely be shut at night unless they are doing overtime which is very unlikely in this day and age.

On the other hand, I cycled home along that path around 8:30 at night for a year without huge problems, got chased once by a drunk tramp but there you go.

With the Stereophonics gig on tonight, it should be fairly busy as the queue usually ends up round there!

Years ago, there were plans about that involved opening up access to the station from the north side via a tunnel under the tracks.  But because this is Swindon we're talking about, it never bloody happened.

There was access at one time but they decided to block the tunnel up for some reason,i guess because of mugging's etc.

The plans I was thinking of involved another entrance to the station with shops etc though.

Ahh i see,i  can't say i heard about that but it sounded a nice idea tho, typical SBC not having the funds to back it up.

The bridge is owned by The Research Councils and is not a public bridge. In practice, if you can get through the train station barriers (the guards are fucking cunts!) then you should be ok. The bridge is open from 07:00 to 22:00 on weekdays, but is closed on weekends and bank holidays.

I'd say you are better off walking up Station Road/Corporation St, and then taking a right down the underpass, alleyway bit.

This tunnel is still there. The staircase on the Station Road side is blocked up, but you can still climb down. The entrance is in one of the car parks. The tunnel itself leads right under the tracks to a dead end, but again you can climb up and onto a bit of wasteland the other side of the tracks.

Which is just dumb, a bridge paid for by the public which the public can't use.

Its not paid for by the public though is it if its owned by the research council? Unless your using the argument that the research council is publically funded, which would just be just very very very very stupid

It did come from public money, indirectly but it is still privately owned!

I bet you think you have a "right" to a trip on NERC's plane as well.

Damn right. They can fly me up to Newcastle to take my seat in the VIP boxes as I've fucking paid for their shirt sponsorship again
